U21 Euros: Italy open against Spain

Italy begin their European Under-21 Championship against Spain on June 16, then face Poland and Belgium.

The Azzurrini were drawn in the Group of Death this evening, despite being the tournament hosts, and face a very tough route to the semi-finals.

The three group winners qualify along with the best runners-up.

Italy open their campaign against Spain at the Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna on June 16.

Gravina: 'Italy stars for U21 Euros'

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina implies all eligible Italy players will be available for the Under-21 European Championship.

The Azzurrini are the host nation, yet also drawn in the Group of Death with Spain, Belgium and Poland.

“Spain as the opening game is an important clash that immediately gives an idea of the difficulty of this tournament,” Gravina told Rai Sport.

Di Biagio bemoans U21 draw

Italy Under-21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio feels they had the toughest draw with Spain, Belgium and Poland in the European Championship.

The Azzurrini are in Group A and begin the competition in 2019 against Spain on June 16 at the Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna.

Italy are hosting the tournament, while Germany are in Group B with Austria, Serbia and Denmark.

England will face France, Romania and Croatia in Group C.

U21 Euros Draw: Italy Group of Death

The draw for the 2019 Under-21 European Championship, hosted by Italy, pits the Azzurri against Spain, Belgium and Poland.

Matches will be played next summer at the Stadio Dall’Ara in Bologna, Mapei Stadium/Stadio Citta del Tricolore in Reggio-Emilia, Stadio Dino Manuzzi in Cesena, Stadio Nereo Rocco in Trieste, Stadio Friuli/Dacia Arena in Udine and San Marino Stadium in Serravalle.

The tournament runs from June 16 to the Final on June 30 at the Dacia Arena in Udine.

Di Biagio: ‘Italy deserved more’

Luigi Di Biagio insists his Italy Under-21s “deserved more” against Germany, but assures “it’ll be a whole different story” come June.

Italy is hosting next summer’s European Championships, but the Azzurrini have lost both friendlies over this international break, to England and Die Mannschaft.

“We aren’t killing off games where we deserved more,” Di Biagio told Rai Sport after tonight’s match.

‘Azzurrini aiming for final’

Italy Under-21 Coach Luigi Di Biagio is aiming to reach the European Championship final on home soil next summer.

Italy and San Marino are hosting the tournament in June, with the final to be played at Udinese’s Dacia Arena.

“To come back and play here we’ll need to reach the final, because otherwise we won’t be involved at the Dacia Arena,” Di Biagio told reporters on a visit to Udine today.

Europa League change approved

UEFA has announced that Europa League final will now be played in the same week as the Champions League final.

Currently the final of the secondary European competition is played the week before the Champions League, with this year’s final on May 24 ahead of the June 3 Champions League final in Cardiff.

However, UEFA is keen to assure that the Europa League also finishes after the domestic season, so from 2019 onward it will be played on the Wednesday before the Champions League final.

Italy to host Under-21 Championship

UEFA has announced that Italy will host the 2019 Under-21 European Championships.

Today saw a meeting of the Executive Committee in Nyon, Switzerland, where proposed changes to the Champions League were ratified.

In addition, European football’s governing body announced that Italy will host the Under-21 European Championship in 2019.

The matches will be played in Udine, Bologna, Reggio Emilia and Cesena.
