Quagliarella: ‘Honoured to be back’

Fabio Quagliarella says “it’s an honour” to be back in the Italy squad, for the first time in almost five years.

The Torino striker won his last cap for the Azzurri in the draw with Romania in November 2010, but has been included in Antonio Conte’s squad for the matches against Azerbaijan and Norway.

“It’s an honour, I’m enthusiastic,” Quagliarella told journalists in a Press conference at Coverciano.

Daniele De Rossi misses out, as he begins a two-match ban following his red card against Bulgaria.

Mario Balotelli had been tipped for a recall, but is injured for Sunday’s Milan-Napoli game, so unavailable for international duty too.

Quagliarella: 'I want an Azzurri spot'

Fabio Quagliarella feels he can still 'earn a spot' within the Azzurri, while Torino need to 'take it slow'.

The World Cup 2010 veteran was called back by Coach Antonio Conte in September of last year, but failed to garner a call-up for the current international break.

Even so, his strong start to the season with Torino allows him an optimistic approach.

“I believe I can cut out a space for myself, I feel the Azzurri colours very strongly,” he said, as reported today by La Gazzetta dello Sport.”

Line-ups: Torino-Empoli

Torino look to Fabio Quagliarella to lead the line against Empoli, as they push for the Europa League.

The Granata take on Maurizio Sarri’s men in Turin this afternoon, and can draw level with sixth-placed Sampdoria with a win.

As the Coppa Italia final will be contested by two teams who will be involved in European competition anyway next season, the Europa League place would therefore go to sixth in Serie A.
