Nobody happy after Roma-Milan

Roma and Milan both feel they could’ve had more than a point, writes Matthew Santangelo, but poor officiating was again centre-stage.

Roma and Milan entered Sunday evening’s pivotal clash at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome looking to gain something different.

Gennaro Gattuso’s men have been defensively sound over a prolonged stretch and, more recently, feeding off the January acquisitions of Lucas Paquetá and Krzysztof Piatek. Clinching a Coppa Italia semi-final berth with a commanding 2-0 win over Napoli midweek meant the red and black approached a trip to the capital feeling pretty good about their chances to climb up the table after Inter fell to Bologna hours prior to kick-off.

Roma ultras target Kolarov

Roma tension is escalating, as after the team bus was pelted with rocks and eggs, offensive graffiti is aimed at Aleksandar Kolarov.

The ultras were already piling pressure on the players after a 3-3 draw with Atalanta, as Kolarov and Kostas Manolas reacted angrily when heckled at the train station on their way to Florence.

Just 24 hours later, the Giallorossi were beaten 7-1 in that Coppa Italia quarter-final and returned by bus to avoid a similar showdown with their fans at the station.

Coppa: Fiorentina put seven past Roma!

Federico Chiesa scored a hat-trick with Luis Muriel, Marco Benassi and a Giovanni Simeone double, as Fiorentina humiliated Roma 7-1 in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

Stefano Pioli’s men will go on to face Milan in the two-legged semi-final.

This was probably the only real shot at silverware for either club, so they fielded practically full-strength teams. Both had dramatic matches at the weekend, as the Viola fought their way to a 4-3 win over Chievo, while the Giallorossi fumbled a 3-0 lead to draw with Atalanta.

Atletico Madrid have reportedly identified Roma left-back Aleksandar Kolarov as a possible replacement for Lucas Hernandez.

According to El Gol Digital, Atleti boss Diego Simeone has ‘set his sights’ on Kolarov for his ‘competitive nature’, while the Serbian has ‘already made two requests’ to the Madrid club.

They would be that he earns a salary ‘similar’ to the €2m he currently earns at Roma and ‘above all’ that he is given a ‘leading role’ in the team.
