Kolarov: ‘Roma are confident’

Aleksandar Kolarov says Roma are confident of what they can achieve this season after beating Atalanta.

The Serb scored the only goal in a hard fought win over La Dea today, firing a free-kick under the home side’s wall.

“It was important to win today. Atalanta are a good team and play great football,” new signing Kolarov said.

“We prepared well and, by suffering, we deserved to win.

“I knew they were expecting me to shoot over the wall. It went well!”

Kolarov knocks down Atalanta

A cheeky Aleksandar Kolarov free kick rolled under the wall proved the difference, as Roma won 1-0 in Bergamo and Atalanta hit the post.

The former Lazio and Manchester City defender made an immediate impact on his return to Serie A, placing a smart set play beneath the jumping legs to surprise Etrit Berisha.

Atalanta laid siege to the Giallorossi in the closing minutes, Josip Ilicic somehow hitting the post from point-blank range and some truly desperate defending in the box.

Roma leave No 10 vacant

Roma have seemingly left their No 10 shirt vacant for this season after Francesco Totti’s retirement.

Totti hung up his boots at the end of the previous campaign, and while Roma have yet to make a decision on whether to retire his 10 jersey, it appears no-one will succeed the club icon just yet.

However, this may be subject to change as the transfer window does not shut until August 31.

Roma: No 2 or 10 shirt assigned

Roma have announced their squad numbers for 2017-18, with nobody inheriting the 10 left empty by Francesco Totti.

The Serie A season kicks off next weekend and the Lega released a list of shirt numbers.

It’s worth noting that the Giallorossi have not assigned the Number 2, meaning there could yet be a new defender in the squad by the time the transfer window closes on August 31.

Also left empty is the Number 10, until May worn by the iconic captain Totti, though it’s unlikely anyone will wear that shirt for a while.

Kolarov ready to ‘set example’

Aleksandar Kolarov says he wants to “set an example” at Roma after being officially unveiled by the club on Friday.

Kolarov left Manchester City to join Roma last month, signing a three-year contract with the Giallorossi, and the experienced left-back is ready to put his Lazio past behind him.

“I was very well received by both the Coach and the players,” he began.

“I played with Dzeko for 4-5 years and I’m happy to be able to play with him again. We want to win the title and we can’t wait to start the season.

Dzeko: ‘Roma progressing well’

Edin Dzeko believes Roma “have done some good work” in pre-season, and praises Aleksandar Kolarov.

The Giallorossi have been warming-up for the season in the USA, drawing with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain and beating Tottenham Hotspur.

The latter two games saw Eusebio Di Francesco’s side lose in a penalty shootout, but Dzeko feels the trip was worthwhile.

“We've done some good work and had three tricky games as well,” the striker explained to the Lupi’s official website.

Roma debuts for Kolarov and Defrel

Roma are expected to give Gregoire Defrel and Aleksandar Kolarov their debuts in tonight’s International Champions Cup game with Tottenham Hotspur.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s side drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain in the opening match of the tournament, losing on a penalty shoot-out.

Tonight the Coach will be able to count on new buys Kolarov and Defrel, who could well be thrown in at the deep end as part of the starting XI.

Stephan El Shaarawy, Rick Karsdorp, Alessandro Florenzi and Emerson Palmieri are unavailable.

Kolarov right man for Roma

Roma fans underestimate just how important Aleksandar Kolarov can be after arriving from Manchester City, writes Tom Scholes.

Roma confirmed the signing of former Lazio and Manchester City defender Aleksander Kolarov with probably the best announcement video we have seen all summer. The video itself may have received a large amount of praise for its humour and originality, but what struck me more was that no one was talking about the signing itself.

Kolarov: Lazio my rivals now

Aleksandar Kolarov accepts Lazio “are my rivals on the pitch” now after joining Roma late on Saturday.

Kolarov spent three years at Lazio between 2007 and 2010, prior to joining Manchester City, but the left-back has since moved to Roma, in a transfer that saw him branded a “worm” by a group of his former supporters.

“I’m very happy to be here. Today’s my first day and I hope everything goes well,” the 31-year-old told Roma TV.
