Zaniolo sorry for Roma handball

Nicolo Zaniolo has apologised for not owning up to a handball that earned Roma a 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday

Roma were trailing 2-1 until the last few minutes, when the referee deemed an Athletic player to have blocked a cross with their arm.

Replays showed it hit Zaniolo, but the Italy starlet refused to confess and Lorenzo Pellegrini equalised from the penalty spot, despite protests from the Giallorossi’s opponents.

“I made a mistake in Perugia this evening,” the 20-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Zaniolo: Roma to the core

Nicolo Zaniolo says he hopes to be ‘as good as’ Francesco Totti and is ready to put Roma ‘at the core’ like Daniele De Rossi did.

Zaniolo broke out for Roma and Italy last season, and the 20-year-old will be of increased importance to the Giallorossi in 2019-20 as they prepare for life without Totti and De Rossi.

“I honestly didn’t expect to have such an impact, given I came from the Primavera team and had a lot to learn,” he told These Football Times.

Zaniolo or Florenzi for Spurs?

Roma could include Nicolo Zaniolo or Alessandro Florenzi in negotiations for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.

Talks between the two clubs have been ongoing for some time, with Roma consultant Franco Baldini not only based in London but also a former Tottenham sporting director.

Il Tempo reports Spurs are still keen on Zaniolo but are now also targeting Florenzi following Kieran Trippier's move to Atletico Madrid.

Consequently, the newspaper is not ruling out an exchange deal involving the Belgian and one of the two Giallorosso.
