Balotelli given four-match ban

Mario Balotelli has been given a four-match ban for his red card in what was probably his last game for Olympique Marseille.

The Italy international was sent off for a high tackle from behind during the 1-0 win over Montpellier on May 24.

It was the closing fixture of the season and if Balotelli does play in Ligue 1 again next term, he’ll have to sit out a four-match ban first.

Between OGC Nice and Marseille, he ended the campaign with eight goals and one assist in 25 Ligue 1 games.

Balotelli sent off for Marseille

Mario Balotelli was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle during what was probably his last game for Olympique Marseille.

The Italy international had only come on as a substitute against Montpellier 29 minutes earlier when he lunged in from behind at defender Daniel Congré.

It was two-footed, it was high and it caught his opponent’s leg in a scissor motion.

This was his fourth red card since joining Ligue 1 in 2016-17, playing for OGC Nice and since January Marseille.

Olympique Marseille striker Mario Balotelli faces the possibility of an eight-match ban for allegedly breaking an opponent’s nose in an off-the-ball incident.

Balotelli has had an impressive start to life at Marseille since joining in January, scoring seven times in 10 games, but could have played his last game of the season.

It is alleged that he elbowed defender Pablo Castro off the ball and broke the Brazilian’s nose in Marseille’s 2-0 defeat to Bordeaux.

Balotelli: 'I might refuse Italy call'

Mario Balotelli warned Italy fans “one day you might need me, but after years of being insulted, denigrated and underestimated, I might refuse to go.”

Although Immobile did provide the assist for Kean, the Lazio striker has fired blanks in his last 10 Azzurri caps.
