SPAL coach Luigi Di Biagio was warned by patron Walter Mattioli but assures he ‘won’t be running away’ and wants to ‘be part of the reconstruction’ in Ferrara.

Di Biagio has lost six and won just one of his eight games in charge, after having replaced Leonardo Semplici in February.

Di Biagio given SPAL warning

SPAL President Walter Mattioli has warned coach Luigi Di Biagio that ‘there won’t be any scope to continue together if we carry on playing like this’.

Di Biagio replaced the hugely-successful Leonardo Semplici in February but has lost six and won just one of his eight games in charge.

'SPAL ready for hotel retreat'

SPAL President Walter Mattioli has confirmed that his team are ‘ready’ to isolate themselves at a hotel for group training.

The government’s demands for squads to go into quarantine from Monday if one of their players tests positive for coronavirus means isolated training camps are the only way to avoid such an outcome.

The FIGC and Lega Serie A have already voiced their disapproval with the measure, but Mattioli says SPAL are happy to oblige.

“We’re ready,” he told Rai Radio.

Mattioli: 'SPAL want to play for salvation'

President Walter Mattioli has claimed SPAL will ‘appeal’ any decision that will lead to relegation from Serie A without resuming play.

SPAL are seven points away from safety as the season is at a standstill, but the patron would like a chance to climb out of the relegation zone and sent down over the table.

One of the hypotheses discussed would be to relegate the teams currently holding the last three places and Mattioli insisted he would fight such a decision.

Mattioli: 'We needed change'

President Walter Mattioli has claimed that SPAL still believe in “our own salvation” after appointing Luigi Di Biagio as the new head coach in Ferrara.

The patron acted after a difficult 2019-20 season so far and Leonardo Semplici left the job with the club rooted at the bottom of Serie A and a seven-point gap up to safety.

In addition to admitting that “the time had come” for a “change”, the chief also believes that Di Biagio can turn things around at the Paolo Mazza.

Mattioli: 'SPAL trust Semplici'

President Walter Mattioli has confirmed that SPAL “trust” Leonardo Semplici and called on his players to commit to the cause.

SPAL are currently bottom of Serie A, with last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Roma extending their winless run in the League to over two months.

However, the patron believes Semplici is the man to guide them up the table, while demanding “strength” from his squad.

“After the defeat to Brescia, we were very disappointed,” Mattioli told ItaSportPress.

President Walter Mattioli has insisted that Andrea Petagna “seems like he wants to stay” at SPAL, despite his admission that joining Roma would be a “dream”.

Inter, as well as Roma, have been mentioned as possible suitors for Petagna next month, but Mattioli assured his No 9 was “at ease” with his current situation.

SPAL in talks for Balzaretti

Former Roma director Federico Balzaretti is in advanced negotiations for a job with SPAL, confirmed President Walter Mattioli.

Balzaretti had been at Roma for seven years, but his contract was not renewed as part of a complete overhaul of their directorial and scouting network.

He won’t be out of a job for long, as SPAL have already made the former full-back an offer.

“I am trying to bring Balzaretti to SPAL, as I want to make our staff even stronger, enriching it with new important skillsets,” Mattioli told Il Tempo.

Mattioli: 'SPAL in Serie A for many years'

SPAL President Walter Mattioli admits their campaign has been “remarkable” and he intends to extend their Serie A stay further, but won’t stand in the way of Manuel Lazzari’s career.

This evening’s 4-0 victory away to Chievo was decisive to secure their top flight status for another season and even temporarily took them into the top half of the table.

SPAL 'apologise to Chiesa, but...'

SPAL have reportedly apologised to Fiorentina for their attack on Federico Chiesa’s character, but the forward is not convinced.

SPAL President Walter Mattioli branded Chiesa as an ‘untrustworthy’ person, who ‘invents fouls out of nowhere’, after Fiorentina beat his club 4-1 in Serie A at the weekend.

Gazzetta dello Sport writes Mattioli called Viola counterpart Mario Cognigni ‘straight after’ the game to say sorry for his comments.
