Mateo Retegui became the first active Genoa player to score a brace for the Italy national team since 1928 with his double in the 2-1 victory over Venezuela on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring in the 40th minute for Italy in Miami, and then restored the Azzurri advantage with 10 minutes of regular time remaining in the second half.

In doing so, he became the first Genoa player to notch a brace for the Italy national team in close to 100 years.

Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino will be licking his lips watching his two main centre-forwards over this international break, as Albert Gudmundsson also netted a hat-trick for Iceland in their 4-1 victory over Israel in Euro 2024 qualifying on Thursday night.

Retegui and Gudmundsson will both be involved again on Sunday night when Italy and Iceland face Ecuador and Ukraine respectively in an international friendlies and further Euro 2024 qualifiers.
