Fonseca: Ref’s attitude was wrong

Paulo Fonseca says he “didn’t like” the referee’s attitude throughout Roma’s 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Sunday.

Nikola Kalinic had a last-minute winner disallowed by Davide Massa, but his conduct caused confusion at the Olimpico as a furious Fonseca claimed the official had told Cagliari’s players there was no foul.

“The referee spoke to the Cagliari players and said there wasn’t a foul,” the Coach said after the game.

No substitute for squad depth

Game management and having options off the bench proved decisive in the Europa League for Lazio and Roma, writes Sam Wilson.

Squad rotation is essential in the Europa League, as Lazio turned the game with Rennes around thanks to options off the bench, whereas injury-hit Roma lacked alternatives against Wolfsberg.

Lazio had a game of two halves against Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais. Simone Inzaghi elected to start with a relatively half-strength side and the absences of key creators Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto were felt for most the game, the Biancocelesti failing to create any real scoring opportunities before the duo entered the fray.

“We knew this would not be an easy game,” the Coach told Roma TV in Austria.

“It is always important to win this type of match. We put in a good performance, controlled the game and created many scoring opportunities,” the Coach told DAZN.

Fonseca: 'Atalanta pressed Roma'

Ancelotti: Madrid 'resisted' James sale

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Real Madrid put up “too much resistance” for James Rodriguez and urged Milan to give Marco Giampaolo time.

Napoli were heavily linked with James throughout the summer, but a deal never took off as Madrid were not willing to send the Colombian back out on loan.
