Sassuolo mourn patron Squinzi

Sassuolo and Serie A are in mourning following the death of President Giorgio Squinzi, at the age of 76.

He was the patron of the Mapei company and the architect of Sassuolo’s rise from Serie C to the top flight and even Europa League football.

Squinzi never hid the fact he was a supporter of Milan, despite purchasing Sassuolo in 2002.

He had been suffering from a long illness, largely handing over the running of the club to his staff.

Atalanta squatters at San Siro

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall knows allowing Atalanta to play Champions League games at San Siro makes sense, but still feels wrong.

Perhaps it’s the decommissioning of ‘battleship San Siro’ that has triggered such contempt. What could make the news that one of the world’s greatest stadiums, is to be demolished and be rebuilt, worse? Both representatives from Inter’s Curva Nord and Milan’s Curva Sud were up in arms this week as it was announced that Atalanta would play their Champions League games in the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. For them, it is certainly salt into a very raw wound, but for Italian Football and Le Dea, it seems an absolute must.

Atalanta to play at San Siro?

There are reports Atalanta asked to play their Champions League home games at San Siro, much to the irritation of Milan fans.

The Orobici have qualified for the biggest tournament in European football for the first time in their history after a third-place finish in Serie A.

The Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo, which will be renamed the Gewiss Arena, is undergoing restructuring work and won’t be ready in time to fit UEFA parameters.

Atalanta UEFA games at the Mapei

Atalanta will continue to use Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium for their European fixtures, while Napoli should eventually be allowed to stay at the San Paolo.

The Orobici have already used the Mapei in Europe in the past and will continue to do so, whether they qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League next term.

As renovation work begins on the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia tonight, the Nerazzurri agreed to play their last two home matches in Serie A in Emilia-Romagna.

Atalanta move to Mapei Stadium

Atalanta have announced that their last two home games of the season, against Genoa and Sassuolo in May, will be at the Mapei Stadium.

The Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo is undergoing restructuring work this summer.

In order to accommodate the building crew, Atalanta will play their final two home fixtures at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia, which is usually the home of Sassuolo.

Papu Gomez insists Atalanta proved “we are a superior team to Copenhagen, even on a pitch that makes playing football almost impossible.”

Why are Atalanta playing in Reggio-Emilia?

Atalanta make their Europa League bow tonight, but they won’t be facing Everton in their home city of Bergamo.

Instead the Orobici will play their European games close to 200km south in Reggio Emilia, a two-hour journey by car.

Their home stadium, the Atleti Azzurri d’Italia wasn’t given a UEFA licence to hold games, and the website Calcio e Finanza has looked into the reasons.

European football’s governing body didn’t grant a licence as a section of the Ubi Giulio Cesare stand doesn’t have numbered seating.
