Srna retires from football

Former Cagliari right-back Darijo Srna has retired from professional football to take up a coaching role at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Srna revealed on Wednesday via social media that he had left Cagliari after just one season in Sardinia.

That has been followed by Shakhtar announcing that he will return to the club to form part of the technical staff of new Coach Luis Castro, who replaces Roma-bound Paulo Fonseca.

Srna bids Cagliari farewell

Darijo Srna says he will ‘never forget’ Cagliari and will be a fan ‘forever’ after announcing his departure from the club.

Srna joined Cagliari from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer and went on to play 28 times for the Sardinians, helping them preserve their top-flight status.

“It’s difficult to find the right words with which I could express the pride of being one of you at the end of my footballing journey, to have made true friends, met some great players and even greater fans,” wrote the right-back on Instagram.

Kean fined for dive, Cagliari

Moise Kean has been fined €2,000 for diving against Cagliari, who will be investigated after their fans racially abused the Juventus striker.

The FIGC ruled on Thursday that a second investigation would be needed to identify the individuals who subjected Kean to racist chants at the Sardegna Arena midweek.

In the meantime, however, the Italy starlet must pay €2,000 for his act of simulation during the Bianconeri’s 2-0 win.

Napoli hitman Arkadiusz Milik is also fined €2,000 for diving during Napoli’s 2-1 defeat to Empoli.

Cagliari players fined

Cagliari’s Luca Ceppitelli and Darijo Srna have both been suspended for two matches and fined after their red cards against Roma.

Ceppitelli was sent off for dissent in the closing stages with his side 2-1 down, and his teammate followed soon after for the same offence.

Despite being down to nine men, the Isolani came back to draw in the final minute of added time.

Ceppitelli has been banned for two matches and fined €6,500 for his actions, with Srna given the same ban and a €5,000 fine.

Srna: ‘Chose Cagliari with my heart’

Cagliari full-back Darijo Srna says he chose to sign for the club “with my heart” and notes “people pay to live in Sardinia” whereas he’s paid to play there.

The Croatian joined the Isolani in the summer after spending almost his entire career at Shakhtar Donetsk, before a doping ban saw him let go.

“President [Tommaso] Giulini wanted me as I am,” Srna explained to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Klavan: 'Serie A came recommended'

Ragnar Klavan reveals he left Liverpool for Cagliari after getting advice on Serie A from Darijo Srna, Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Lucas Leiva.

The Estonia international completed the move on deadline day for approximately €2m, ending his two-year Anfield spell.

“I had offers from several teams, including in other countries, but Cagliari really wanted me,” the centre-back told Sky Sport Italia.

Klavan will bring valuable experience to the Sardinians, along with Shakhtar Donetsk and Croatia veteran Srna.

Srna: ‘I’m not a doper’

Darijo Srna insists he “showed to the whole world that I’m not guilty” of doping, as he’s presented as a Cagliari player.

The right-back was given a six-month ban after tests showed adverse values of dehydroepiandrosterone in his system.

While the NADC accepted that Srna hadn’t intentionally taken the substance, stating that there was “no significant guilt or negligence on the part of the athlete”.

Official: Cagliari pick up Srna

Cagliari have announced the signing of former Croatia right-back Darijo Srna from Shakhtar Donetsk on a free transfer.

A statement on Cagliari’s official website confirms Srna has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the option for a third.

The 36-year-old made over 500 appearances for Shakhtar and represented his country 134 times but has not played since last September due to a drug ban.

He becomes the Sardinians’ second summer arrival after Rolando Maran, who was recently unveiled as their new Coach.

Srna undergoes Cagliari medical

Shakhtar Donetsk right-back Darijo Srna has reportedly undergone the first part of his medical with Cagliari.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio’s website, Srna left the Villa Stuart sports clinic in Rome on Tuesday afternoon ahead of more tests 24 hours later.

The 36-year-old is set to join the Sardinians on a free transfer once his Shakhtar contract expires on June 30.

He made over 500 appearances for the Ukrainians and represented Croatia 134 times but has not played since last September due to a drug ban.
