On this day: Milan legends retire

On this day in 1997, Franco Baresi and Mauro Tassotti played their last game for Milan as Cagliari won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Roberto Muzzi.

The Rossoblu travelled to San Siro for the last match of the 1996-97 campaign, when Milan ended 11th in Serie A and bid farewell to their captain fantastic Baresi.

Tassotti, meanwhile, played out of position - alongside Demetrio Albertini in central midfield.

Stars pay tribute to Baresi at 60

Franco Baresi’s former Milan teammates have paid tribute to the legendary defender, on his 60th birthday.

Born in Travagliato on May 8 1960, Baresi joined the Rossoneri academy at a young age. He was picked up at the age of 12 but rejected by city rivals Inter.

He would go on to make his debut in 1978, working hard to establish himself in the starting XI the following season.

Baresi: 'Milan will return to the top'

Milan legend Franco Baresi, who turns 60 today, hopes to see Serie A 2019/20 resume and believes the Rossoneri ‘can return to the top’ of Italian football.

The World Cup winner points out ‘it‘s not easy’ for the players to return to empty stadiums after the long forced break, but insists ‘football must prove to be an example of responsibility’.

Baresi: 'Milan will succeed'

Milan legend Franco Baresi has written an open letter, assuring fans ‘we will succeed together in taking our great club to the top’.

Baresi is the ultimate one-club man, making over 700 appearances for Milan between 1978 and 1997 and winning six Scudetti, as well as three European Cups/Champions Leagues.

With the Rossoneri’s fortunes affected by the coronavirus and an ongoing recovery from Yonghong Li’s disastrous reign as owner, Baresi penned a heartfelt piece to boost supporter morale.

Kjaer: 'A dream to play for Milan'

New Milan signing Simon Kjaer is ecstatic over his move to the Rossoneri. “I’ve always dreamt of playing for this club.”

The Danish defender has signed for Milan on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season from Spanish outfit Sevilla.

Kjaer had initially joined Atalanta on loan, but struggled for playing time at La Dea, and has now made the short journey to Milan.

Interviewed by Milan’s official website, Kjaer claims it’s always been a dream to represent the Rossoneri.

Sheva: 'Maldini true symbol of Milan'

Andriy Shevchenko named Paolo Maldini as the symbol of the club as it celebrates its 120th birthday. “He represented my Milan, but also Milan through the years.”

Sheva gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport and spoke about who he felt was the one player that symbolised the Rossoneri most.

“I would say Maldini because he represents my Milan, but has also Milan through the years.

Lippi: 'Never seen anyone like De Ligt'

Marcello Lippi has worked with all the greats, but “never seen anyone like Matthijs de Ligt at his age” ahead of the Juventus transfer.

The Bianconeri are reportedly on the verge of sealing a €67m plus €13m in bonuses deal for the Ajax starlet, however Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United also remain interested in the 19-year-old.

“I believe that the player who would be the best signing for Juve would be De Ligt,” Lippi told Tuttosport.

Happy Birthday, Franco Baresi!

Today is the 59th birthday of Milan legend Franco Baresi, one of the greatest defenders of all time.

Born in Travagliato on May 8, 1960; Baresi joined the Rossoneri youth system at the age of 12 - having been rejected by city rivals Inter.

The centre-back made his debut at the age of 17 on April 23, 1978 and became a fixture in the starting XI in the following campaign.

That season brought a first Scudetto, but the Diavolo were relegated to Serie B in 1980 as part of the Totonero match fixing scandal.
