Serie A going global again

With the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and the return of Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian top flight is once again increasing its global reach, writes Gaby McKay.

The other 19 Serie A clubs must be wondering why Juventus couldn’t have announce the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo a few months earlier.

The Bianconeri completed a deal for the Portuguese superstar in early July, with CR7 joining in a €100m deal which caught attention across the globe. There was much talk of the growing appeal of the Italian top flight both on and off the pitch, and how the move could benefit calcio in general.

Serie A TV rights transformed

The Lega Serie A decided today to transform TV rights from the 2018-2020 seasons, forcing viewers to sign up with more than one broadcaster.

Private sale for TV rights

The Lega Serie A has confirmed the decision to drop Mediapro’s television rights bid and proceed to private negotiations.

On May 28, all 20 clubs voted to terminate the contract, but the Spanish broadcaster came up with some last-minute guarantees.

Those were presented at today’s meeting, but ANSA reports lawyers were unconvinced and the clubs decided to proceed to private negotiations.

Rather than putting all of the rights up for tender, the Serie A clubs will now work out a series of packages to be sold privately.
