Careca: 'Lukaku better than Icardi'

Napoli legend Antonio Careca maintains Romelu Lukaku is a better striker than Mauro Icardi. “The Argentine doesn’t make the difference.”

Lukaku was brought in from Manchester United for €65m plus bonuses, a club record, while Icardi moved to PSG on loan with €75m option to buy.

“Icardi could’ve played for Napoli and nobody would’ve blocked it. That’s a real shame,” Scudetto winner Careca told Il Giorno newspaper.

Careca: Icardi can go to hell!

Napoli hero Careca has insisted that Mauro Icardi ‘can go to hell’ if he does not want to join, while backing Arkadiusz Milik to reach 30 goals this season.

Napoli have reportedly given Icardi until Thursday to accept their offer, prompting Careca to hit out at how the Inter striker has made his former club wait.

“Are we really still waiting for his answer? If he doesn’t want to come, he can go to hell,” the 58-year-old told Il Mattino.

Mertens strike sets two records

Dries Mertens has made history by becoming the top all-time Belgian scorer in Serie A and equalling Napoli hero Careca.

He found the net with a stunning strike from distance in this evening’s encounter with Empoli at the Stadio San Paolo.

It was his 73rd Serie A goal, allowing him to equal the tally set by Brazilian Scudetto star Careca, making him joint sixth in the all-time club charts.

In tribute to Careca, he celebrated the goal by replicating the famous ‘samba’ moves seen in Serie A from 1987 to 1994.

Careca: 'Sarri's Napoli for Scudetto'

Antonio Careca believes Maurizio Sarri “is the right Coach to bring the title back to Napoli. It’s the best football in Italy, but what level in the world?”

The Brazilian striker was in the squad with Diego Armando Maradona when they won the UEFA Cup in 1989 and the Scudetto in 1989-90.

“It took a while to absorb Gonzalo Higuain’s departure, like mourning a family member, but now without him the team feels more responsibility, more courage, more maturity and therefore more winning,” Careca told Il Mattino newspaper.

Careca: ‘Napoli better than Juve’

Former Napoli striker Careca insists the Partenopei were “far superior” despite their defeat to Juventus.

The Vesuviani went down 1-0 in Turin, surrendering the Serie A lead to the defending champions.

However, the Brazilian - who helped Napoli to a Scudetto and UEFA Cup in his time at San Paolo - believes his former side are right in the Scudetto race.

“The Scudetto? Yes, it might be the right year,” Careca said on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

Careca: 'Higuain key for Napoli title'

Napoli legend Careca believes Gonzalo Higuain is the key to winning the Scudetto and Jorginho earns admirers in Brazil.

The Partenopei went top of the table this week for the first time since 1989-90, which is the year they won the Serie A title.

“My love for Napoli was pure and I played my farewell game here rather than in Brazil, as I wanted to pay tribute to the city,” revealed Careca on a visit to the San Paolo.

Supercoppa flashbacks

As Scudetto winners Juventus and Coppa Italia victors Napoli prepare to do battle in China, Luca Cetta takes a walk down Super Cup memory lane.

In 1990 their roles were reversed. Napoli were starting the campaign as reigning champions, Juventus moving in a new direction after sacking UEFA Cup and Italian Cup-winning Coach Dino Zoff. Two months after Diego Maradona orchestrated Italy’s World Cup downfall at the Stadio San Paolo, he was back to claim what was until recently Napoli’s last major trophy.

Careca tells Napoli to believe

Careca has told Napoli to believe that they can win the Scudetto this season and emulate the team he played in, which triumphed in 1990.

Napoli currently lie three points behind Milan with seven games of the campaign still remaining and have the look of genuine title contenders.

Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Careca said: "Napoli must fight until the last second because the Scudetto is in reach."

Asked to compare the current Napoli side with the 1990 vintage, he said: "There is a substantial difference.
