Coppa: Juve beat Toro amid controversy

Juventus beat Torino 2-0 with Douglas Costa and a very controversial Mario Mandzukic goal to set up a Coppa Italia Semi-Final with Atalanta.

The other showdown for the Final will be between Milan and Lazio on January 31 and February 28.

Both sides had numerous injury problems, as Gigi Buffon, Mattia De Sciglio, Benedikt Howedes and Juan Cuadrado missed out for the hosts, who used Mario Mandzukic as a centre-forward. Toro had to do without Andrea Belotti, Adem Ljajic, Cristian Ansaldi, Lyanco, Antonio Barreca and Simone Edera.

Douglas Costa comes good for Juve

Juventus have rarely embraced Brazilian players, but Douglas Costa could be an exception, writes Emmet Gates.

Throughout their 120-year history, Juventus have had a somewhat uneasy relationship with Brazilian players.

Cast your mind back to epic failures such as Diego and Felipe Melo, the pair who Alessio Secco banked on bringing the glory days back to Turin at the end of the ‘00s. The mere mention of Brazilian-born Amauri is enough to send Juve fans into a cold sweat and search for an alcohol-laced drink.

Same old Napoli-Juventus

There were plenty of surprises as Napoli and Juve met on Friday but, explains Adam Digby, the more the Old Lady changes, the more she stays the same.

Napoli have made no secret of their title ambitions, players happily discussing the pre-season “Scudetto Pact” that kept their squad intact this past summer. Making an unwritten agreement that they would stay together for at least another year, their sole aim was to try clinch the Serie A crown for the first time since Diego Maradona graced the Stadio San Paolo.

De Sciglio to return for Juventus

It’s expected Mattia De Sciglio will start for Juventus in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Barcelona tonight.

The Bianconeri will qualify for the Last 16 if they avoid defeat to the Blaugrana and Sporting don’t beat Olympiakos.

Despite the defeat to Sampdoria on Sunday, it’s expected that Coach Massimiliano Allegri will stick with his 4-2-3-1 formation for tonight’s match.

Stephan Lichtsteiner isn’t in the Champions League squad, so Mattia De Sciglio is expected to replace him at right-back.
