Bologna in seven-goal Villarreal thriller

There was no shortage of entertainment when Bologna fell to defeat in a 4-3 thriller with Villarreal, hitting the woodwork twice.

The pre-season friendly was played at the Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle, San Marino, and Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic watched from his hospital bed during chemotherapy via live-streaming, as he has done throughout this summer.

Official: Bonera joins Milan staff

As expected, Daniele Bonera has officially returned to Milan as part of new Coach Marco Giampaolo’s staff.

The defender hung up his boots at Villarreal this week and is back at Milanello, where he played from 2006 to 2015, making 201 competitive appearances.

It is a new role for the 38-year-old centre-back, who will be working as one of Giampaolo’s assistants, joined by Francesco Conti, Salvatore Foti and Fabio Micarelli.

Stefano Rapetti is the fitness coach, Luigi Turci the goalkeeping coach and Emiliano Betti his assistant.

Bonera set for Milan role

There are reports in Spain that Daniele Bonera has turned down a new contract with Villarreal so he can join Marco Giampaolo’s Milan coaching staff.

The 38-year-old defender has been in Spain since he left Milan in 2015 and there are suggestions Villarreal wanted him to continue.

However, he seems to have turned that chance down for a new experience at San Siro.

He’s set to join new Coach Giampaolo’s coaching staff as an assistant manager.

Albiol: Back at Napoli, if...

Raul Albiol has thanked Napoli for ‘six unforgettable years’ after joining Villarreal and promises to come back to celebrate if they win the Scudetto.

Albiol completed his transfer to Villarreal on Thursday after a six-year spell at Napoli that yielded a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa but no Serie A title.

“These have been six incredible years. I thank all the fans for the support they gave me,” the defender told Radio Kiss Kiss.

Official: Albiol joins Villarreal

Napoli have confirmed that defender Raul Albiol has left the club to join Spanish side Villarreal.

In a statement on their official website, Napoli thanked Albiol for his ‘commendable commitment and exemplary professionalism’.

Transfermarkt reports Villarreal have paid €5m for the Spaniard, who has signed a three-year contract.

The 33-year-old made over 200 appearances for the Partenopei following his arrival from Real Madrid in 2013, winning a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa.

President Aurelio De Laurentiis said Napoli owed an easy exit to Raul Albiol, but won’t be drawn on Kostas Manolas and James Rodriguez.

The patron had been quite insulting about Albiol, saying the defender would be “doing us a favour” by moving to Villarreal, but was more diplomatic this afternoon.

“We accepted Albiol’s transfer request because we owed it to him,” De Laurentiis told Radio Kiss Kiss.

Albiol passes Villarreal medical

Napoli defender Raul Albiol has passed a medical with Villarreal ahead of his proposed return to Spain.

AS reports Albiol will formally sign for Villarreal in the next few days.

However, while the newspaper claims they will pay the €6m release clause in the 33-year-old’s contract, Superdeporte has the figure down at €4-5m.

The local publication also writes he has agreed a three-year deal with the Yellow Submarine, worth €2m a season after tax.

Bonera offered Milan job

Villarreal defender Daniele Bonera could retire this summer and return to Milan as an assistant to Marco Giampaolo.

The centre-back just turned 38 and his contract with Villarreal expires at the end of the month.

He has been in Spain since 2015, but spent nine years at San Siro and played 201 competitive games for the club.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bonera has been offered a role in new Coach Giampaolo’s staff.

Throughout his career, the defender also played for Brescia and Parma.

Napoli: Albiol out, Manolas in?

Raul Albiol is on the verge of saying yes to a €4m Villarreal move, and Napoli could replace him by paying the €36m clause for Roma's Kostas Manolas.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, the Andalusian side are set to pay the €4m release clause that the Partenopei have on their 33-year-old defender and will offer him €7m in wages spread out over three years.

The Spain international arrived in Serie A in 2013 from Real Madrid for €12m and has played 236 times for the Azzurri during his stay at the Stadio San Paolo.

Villarreal to sign Albiol

Villarreal are close to signing Napoli defender Raul Albiol for just €4m.

Corriere dello Sport reports Villarreal have agreed to pay Albiol’s release clause, while the defender is ready to return to Spain.

Marca adds the deal is ‘practically closed’, a year after the Yellow Submarine tried and failed to sign the stopper.

The veteran, who turns 34 in September, joined Napoli from Real Madrid in 2013.

He went on to play 218 times for the Partenopei, winning a Coppa Italia and Supercoppa.
