Bologna: 'Wish ref had viewed incident'

Bologna assistant manager Emilio De Leo suggests the referee viewing the Matthijs de Ligt incident on VAR “would’ve been a nice gesture.”

De Ligt mis-kicked the ball on to his trailing arm in stoppages and the officials in the VAR booth informed the referee after a ‘silent check’ that there was no need for him to conduct an on-field review.

Why De Ligt didn't warrant a penalty

Bologna had penalty appeals in the final minutes of their 2-1 defeat to Juventus, but the IFAB rules show it was not a spot-kick.

The incident occurred in stoppages and there was a ‘silent check’ in the VAR booth, alerting the referee he could continue the game.

Fans were furious, but a look at the 2019-20 IFAB Laws of the Game shows why De Ligt’s intervention did not warrant a spot-kick.

The 20-man shortlist for the Golden Boy 2019 Award has been announced, including Joao Felix, Matthijs de Ligt, Ansu Fati and Nicolò Zaniolo.

A large international panel votes for the player aged under 21 who is most likely to make his mark in the coming campaign.

It was won by Ajax defender De Ligt last year, before he reached the Champions League semi-final and then completed a transfer to Juventus.

The big favourite this time is Atletico Madrid and Portugal forward Joao Felix and the winner will be announced in Turin on December 16.

Van der Sar: De Ligt like Ronaldo

Ajax chief Edwin van der Sar has likened Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt to Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of his desire “to be the best in the world.”

De Ligt has endured a rocky start to his Juve career after being thrown in as cover for the injured Giorgio Chiellini, but Van der Sar has no concerns about the 20-year-old.

“His mentality, that of someone who always tries to improve, makes him want to be the best in the world,” the Bianconeri’s former No 1 told ESPN.

Euro 2020: Elmas leads Serie A scorers

Several Serie A players were on target in this evening’s Euro 2020 qualifiers, as Eljif Elmas bagged a brace for Macedonia to beat Josip Ilicic’s Slovenia.

Napoli midfielder Elmas is continuing his impressive progress this season with both goals, as North Macedonia secured a 2-1 victory over Slovenia.

It was an all-Serie A affair, because Atalanta star Ilicic got the consolation goal for Slovenia.

Elsewhere, Parma midfielder Juraj Kucka found the net in Slovakia’s 1-1 draw with Wales.

While Maurizio Sarri and Juventus showed their ability to adapt, Antonio Conte’s Inter struggle beyond Plan A, explains Elio Salerno.

The Derby d’Italia was once again decided by a late Gonzalo Higuain goal at San Siro, but everything leading up to that moment showed the progress at both Juventus and Inter.

Bonucci: 'The game we enjoy'

Leonardo Bonucci said the 2-1 win over Inter at San Siro was “the kind of game we enjoy” and he’s eager to help Juventus teammate Matthijs de Ligt.

Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain scored either side of a Lautaro Martinez penalty to decide the Derby d’Italia, ending Inter’s 100 per cent record.

“We were able to deal with the various moments of the game with confidence in ourselves, but also humility,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.
