De Ligt admits Juve 'surprise'

Matthijs de Ligt has admitted his ‘surprise’ at the level of his Juventus teammates and that it will be ‘difficult’ to become a starter.

De Ligt has been thrown straight in by Juve following his €85.5m transfer from Ajax, already facing the likes of Harry Kane in the International Champions Cup, while scoring an own goal against Inter.

“I’m very happy with my teammates, they’re really friendly. I learn from them every day,” the 19-year-old told Tuttosport.

ICC: Ronaldo and Buffon beat Inter

Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out a Matthijs de Ligt own goal, but Juventus veteran Gigi Buffon saved three Inter penalties in the shoot-out.

This was the second International Champions Cup game for both teams, as Juve lost at the last second to Tottenham 3-2 and Inter fell to Manchester United.

De Ligt: Money not a factor

Juventus new boy Matthijs de Ligt has rubbished ‘nonsense’ that he rejected Paris Saint-Germain because he would earn less than Kylian Mbappe.

De Ligt recently completed an €85.5m transfer to Juve from Ajax, but not before he was linked with the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and PSG.

“When you think of Italy, you think of defenders,” the defender told Algemeen Dagblad.

“The best Italian players in history are defenders: was a fan of Baresi, Maldini, Cannavaro and Nesta growing up.

Leonardo Bonucci was “struck by Maurizio Sarri’s ideas and intelligence,” but the Juventus defender wants to “get back to the player I was two years ago.”

Sarri: ‘De Ligt will face Tottenham’

Juventus Coach Maurizio Sarri confirms Matthijs de Ligt will “certainly play part of the game” against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Bianconeri face the Champions League finalists in Singapore tomorrow, and fans are excited to get a glimpse of the new €75m signing.

“So far he hasn’t trained with his teammates,” Sarri pointed out.

“He’ll certainly play part of the game though.”

Sarri was appointed to replace Massimiliano Allegri, and there’s likely to be a big change of style this season.

De Ligt: Always been a Juve fan

Matthijs de Ligt has confessed that he has always been a Juventus fan after choosing their No 4 jersey.

A picture recently surfaced of De Ligt wearing a Juve shirt as a child, and the defender confirmed at his presentation on Friday that he had indeed been a supporter of the Old Lady, explaining how Fabio Cannavaro was his inspiration.

“If you're a defender, you already know which defender I admired. It was Fabio Cannavaro, who won the World Cup and Ballon d'Or in 2006.

OFFICIAL: Juve sign €85.5m De Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt has completed his €85.5m transfer to Juventus from Ajax, making him the most expensive defender in Italian football history.

A statement on Juve’s official website reads: “Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that the agreement with Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax NV for the definitive acquisition of the registration rights of the player Matthijs de Ligt has been reached for a consideration of €75m, payable in five financial years, and additional costs of €10.5m.
