Female ref for UEFA Super Cup

Stephanie Frappart will be the referee for the European Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea, the first woman to officiate a UEFA men’s game.

The game will be played at the Besiktas Park in Istanbul on August 14.

It is a tournament between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.

The announcement from UEFA makes history, as the 35-year-old French official recently blew the whistle for the Women’s World Cup Final between the United States and the Netherlands.

Switzerland international's body found

Tragically, divers have recovered the body of Young Boys and Swiss women’s team player Florijana Ismaili from Lake Como.

She had been on a rented boat with a friend on Saturday afternoon when diving in for a swim only around 100m from shore, but never resurfaced.

After days of searches, which had to use a robot to reach the depths of the lake, her body was found today.

She was 24 years old.

Bertolini: 'Make women's game professional'

Coach Milena Bertolini feels they cannot progress until her players are recognised professional athletes, but “we got Italy passionate about women’s football and that is the real success of this World Cup.”

The Azzurre hadn’t even participated in the World Cup for 20 years, but reached the quarter-finals and were only eliminated by a 2-0 defeat to European Champions Holland.

Azzurre can't keep up with Holland

Italy capitulated to Holland and their own exhaustion, but Andrea Tallarita believes this Women’s World Cup opened up a new era.

And so it happened: the fatigue conundrum, which had been dogging the Azzurre from at least their third game in the Women's World Cup , finally caught up with them. Against a Dutch team with higher firepower but lower fortifications, the Italians held their own honourably for one half of the game, and then succumbed to the team that was able to keep the highest pace for the longest stretch of time.

WWC: Italy head out to Netherlands

Italy’s adventure in the Women’s World Cup came to an end with a 2-0 quarter-final defeat to two Netherlands headers.

The Azzurre brought Aurora Galli into the starting XI after her goal in the Round of 16 against China, but Italy were once again the underdogs against the reigning European Champions. Curiously, the game took place 19 years to the day since Italy beat Holland on penalties in the Euro 2000 semi-final, complete with Francesco Totti Panenka spot-kick.

The Great Wall of the Women's World Cup

Italy defeating China was an impressive outcome, but Andrea Tallarita believes that in this Women's World Cup the real test of might is only just beginning.

It really would have taken a small miracle for China to beat Italy. The ladies from the Far East had a well-organised squad, but their greatest weakness coincided with the Azzurre's outstanding strength: having scored only once in their three games to that point, the Chinese were as bad at banging goals in as our girls are at keeping them out.

Since Italy has also shown some considerable attacking prowess, it seemed natural – all tactical permutations aside – to expect the girls in blue to outscore their opponents, and this is exactly what happened.

WWC: Dutch quarter-final for Italy

Italy will face the Netherlands in the Women’s World Cup quarter-final on Saturday afternoon after a dramatic win over Japan.

It kicks off on Saturday at 14.00 UK time (13.00 GMT), while the other quarter-finals are Norway-England, France-USA and Germany-Sweden.

The Dutch side thanked a brace from Lieke Martens, but above all her ice cool stoppage-time penalty to decide the 2-1 victory.

Bertolini: 'Azzurre were clinical'

Italy CT Milena Bertolini admits their performance against China wasn’t as free-flowing as previous Women’s World Cup games, but “we were clinical.”

The Azzurre secured their spot in the quarter-finals following today’s 2-0 victory over China, who usually do very well in these tournaments.

“It’s an incredible result,” Bertolini told Rai Sport just one day after her birthday.

WWC: Azzurre knock China out

Italy stormed through to the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals after a 2-0 victory over China, with goals from Valentina Giacinti and Aurora Galli.

The Azzurre broke through early on in this Round of 16 tie when Giacinti pounced on a defensive error to spark the Barbara Bonansea counter and then finished the move from Elisa Bartoli’s cross.

There was a VAR check that decided China would not receive a penalty for Sara Gama’s challenge on Wang Shuang, while Laura Giuliani was crucial with her save on the same player.
