Mancini: 'Italy not far behind the best'

Roberto Mancini maintains sides like France, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany are “not that far ahead” of Italy going into Euro 2020.

The Azzurri qualified for the tournament with three games to spare after winning seven out of seven, while it could be eight tonight against Liechtenstein.

“We’re playing again after three days, so it’s a chance for some players to rest and others to make their mark,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Italy's opportunity to experiment

With Italy punching their ticket to Euro 2020, Anthony Barbagallo identified areas of the team where Roberto Mancini should experiment.

Just two years after missing out on the World Cup, that passionate spirit has been reignited among many Italian fans. It felt like an eternity since we last saw the players and fans with smiles etched across their faces. With the Italian flags and shirts absent in Russia last year, the Azzurri supporters can now take these items out of their closets and put them on display at next year’s monumental Euro 2020.

Talent not enough for Azzurrini

Football Italia’s Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks at the new era for the Italian U21 side, but seemingly with the same old problems.

After what seemed like constant disappointment, there is a new feeling of hope with Italy’s U21 team. There has never been any doubt around the talent at the Coach’s disposal, but that hasn’t stopped the team performing well below the levels expected.

Exiting at the group stage in a European Championship they were hosting was utterly unacceptable, so Gigi Di Biagio had to go. Now they have a new man in charge and so far results have been mixed ahead of today’s trip to Armenia.

Tension in Argentina victory

Argentina beat Ecuador 6-1 in a friendly match, with Fiorentina defender German Pezzella on target, but Lautaro Martinez had a moment of tension.

The Seleccion were already 2-0 up when they were awarded a penalty and it wasn’t clear who was meant to take it.

Inter striker Lautaro Martinez and Leandro Paredes both wanted the ball, so eventually Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul intervened to calm the situation down.

Paredes eventually won and converted successfully, which saw him hug Lautaro during the celebration.

Inter, Juventus and Napoli have long tracked Sandro Tonali, but it’s reported Fiorentina are now ready to pay €30-40m for the Brescia midfielder.

Nicknamed the new Andrea Pirlo, Tonali is only 19 years old and in his debut Serie A campaign, but is already set for his senior Italy debut.

That may well come on Tuesday in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Liechtenstein.

According to the Corriere dello Sport newspaper, the number of clubs interested in purchasing Tonali is growing fast.

Chiesa avoids serious injury

Federico Chiesa has left the Italy camp with a muscular injury, but Fiorentina confirmed there are no lesions.

The Viola star limped off during the first half of Italy’s 2-0 win over Greece last night, a result that secured their Euro 2020 qualification.

Chiesa underwent tests that showed there are no lesions, so it is not a serious issue and he could be back for next week’s Serie A games.

In accordance with Roberto Mancini and the Italy staff, Chiesa has been released back to his club and will begin treatment with the Fiorentina medics.

D'Ambrosio: 'Fractured my toe'

Inter full-back Danilo D’Ambrosio is expected to leave the Italy camp after an injury. “I fear I’ve fractured my little toe.”

He suffered several knocks during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Greece at the Stadio Olimpico, which secured qualification for Euro 2020.

“I did get a bruise to my right knee, but the real problem is that I fear I’ve fractured my little toe on my left foot,” D’Ambrosio told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Practically perfect Italy progress

Italy are a team transformed from World Cup failures to Euro 2020 perfect records, but Giancarlo Rinaldi awaits further developments.

They might have disguised themselves in green, but it did not leave us feeling blue. From one of the lowest points in the history of the Italian national team, we really could not have asked for more.

A 100% Euro 2020 qualification record - matched only by Belgium - and a place secured with three games to spare would have seemed almost unimaginable two years ago. Roberto Mancini has delivered on his promises with the same style he used to produce with the Sampdoria Number 10 on his back.
