Higuain still out for Argentina

Argentina have again overlooked Gonzalo Higuain for their squad to face Russia on November 10 but call up five Serie A players, including Mauro Icardi.

Higuain’s poor form for Juve since the start of the season keeps him out of Argentina’s squad, but Coach Jorge Sampaoli assured the striker was in his thoughts for the World Cup next summer.

“Gonzalo’s a player I know well, he has nothing to prove,” he said at a Press conference.

‘Chiesa absolutely not leaving Fiorentina’

Fiorentina President Mario Cognigni has insisted that winger Federico Chiesa will “absolutely not” leave the club any time soon.

Speculation linking Chiesa with a €40m move to Napoli resurfaced last week, but Cognigni vowed the Viola would not sell the winger unilaterally.

“Last January, Chiesa decided to commit to Fiorentina until 2021 on his own merits,” he told Premium Sport.

‘Argentina must count on Higuain’

Fiorentina and Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta believes his country “must count on” Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain at the World Cup.

Higuain has fallen out of favour for Argentina since Jorge Sampaoli’s appointment over the summer, with Inter star Mauro Icardi preferred, but Batistuta feels the former Napoli hitman “was treated very badly” by his country.

“Higuain was treated very badly,” he told Radio La Red.

Serie A Team of Week 8

As Napoli remain top of the table, Dave Taylor selects his best XI from Week 8’s top action over a long weekend.

Tomas Strakosha [Lazio]

The Lazio ‘keeper had to be on his toes from the start, first finger tipping a Khedira thunderbolt to safety then suffocating two Gonzalo Higuain efforts. However, it was in the last moment that he kept his very best for when saving Paolo Dybala’s penalty. Outstanding.

Kalidou Koulibaly [Napoli]

Pioli: 'Fiorentina suffered for win'

Stefano Pioli believes Fiorentina’s 2-1 win over Udinese was more precious because they were “made to suffer.”

The Viola had seemed to be in complete control, leading 2-0 through a Cyril Thereau brace, but Samir’s goal kept the result in doubt to the final whistle.

“We had a complete lack of intensity in the defeat to Chievo, so it was important to have this reaction,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

Fiorentina thank Thereau double

Cyril Thereau bagged a brace against his former club, giving Fiorentina a much-needed victory over surprisingly negative Udinese.

It was a game of two halves at the Stadio Franchi, as the hosts were almost embarrassingly dominant before the break.

Thereau eventually got the goal, Giovanni Simeone knocking down a Federico Chiesa cross for him to turn in, but it could easily have been more with Gabriele Angella’s desperate goal-line clearance on Thereau and the woodwork denying Giovanni Simeone.
