Fiorentina deny Van Basten rumours

Fiorentina have immediately moved to issue a formal denial after reports Marco Van Basten was due to take over next season.

The rumours started when Sporting Lisbon general manager Pedro Baltazar told the media a surprise scoop.

“Van Basten will never be the Sporting Coach. Why? That's easy: next season Van Basten will be on the Fiorentina bench. He has already been hired.”

However, the Viola very quickly reacted with an official denial in their statement this evening.

Montolivo: 'Modern Italy has quality'

Riccardo Montolivo reveals how Cesare Prandelli has changed Italy's style. “We aim to play pretty fast, one-touch quality football.”

The Azzurri got their 1-0 win away to Slovenia with a well-taken goal, as Thiago Motta's give-and-go with Federico Balzaretti set him up for the angled drive.

“I am happy as we overall played a good game and could've taken the lead earlier, which would've made things easier,” said the Fiorentina star.

Mutu: I feel mature

Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu claims that he has finally matured after a difficult year in Serie A.

The Romania international was banned for nine months after failing a doping test.

Then, shortly after making his comeback, he fell out with Fiorentina and was frozen out of the squad.

Mutu apologised for leaving training without permission and is back on form.

"I am happy again, even if I am conscious of the great responsibility that I have," Mutu said.

'Fiorentina have to be in Europe'

Fiorentina patron Diego Della Valle believes his club has to be in Europe and can't regress into being a mid-table team.

Sunday's draw at home to Roma meant Fiorentina slipped to ninth place in Serie A and although they are unbeaten in five games there is a sense that qualifying for the Europa League might be a step too far with so little of the season remaining.

Fiorentina have stood by Sinisa Mihajlovic, insisting that he is their choice for the long-term, but Della Valle's latest comments will do little to kill speculation.

Viola scout Trochowski

Fiorentina are already planning for next season and have earmarked Hamburg midfielder Piotr Trochowski as a potential transfer target.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands the 27-year-old is Fiorentina's No 1 priority this summer, but they face competition from Sporting Lisbon.

Trochowski is out of contract in the summer and would represent a low cost addition to Fiorentina's midfield.

Meanwhile, it is also being reported that Fiorentina have bid €4.5m for Genk's 21-year-old striker Jelle Vossen.

Fiorentina to stick with Miha

Fiorentina owner Andrea Della Valle has denied mounting speculation that Sinisa Mihajlovic won't be at the club next season.

The Viola are unbeaten in five games in Serie A, but slid to ninth on Sunday after a throwing away a lead twice to draw 2-2 with Roma.

Asked about Mihajlovic's future, Della Valle said: "Sinisa has a contract and the agreements between us will be respected: we'll go forward with him long-term.

"Since our important players returned, he is showing how much he is worth as a Coach."

Mihajlovic: 'Facing Roma like a derby!'

Fiorentina-Roma is no ordinary game for Sinisa Mihajlovic. “We can beat them and it's a derby for me, so we'll play it like a Cup Final.”

The Viola Coach has faced the Giallorossi many times in his past career as a Lazio player from 1998 to 2004.

“It is a special match and I know what it means for the Fiorentina fans. It's a derby for me too, so we'll play it like a Cup Final,” declared Mihajlovic.

A Fiorentina to again respect

After Fiorentina's first half of the season, few would have believed that they would now dare to dream of Europe again. Rob Paton writes

Fiorentina fans endured a miserable first half to the season. Defensive uncertainty, an uninspired attack, an almost unrivalled injury crisis, formation tweaks, diminishing player motivation and a distracting transfer window all contributed to a woeful start. The end of January saw the side in 14th, five points off the drop zone and still in with a chance of being dragged into a competitive relegation fight.

Gamberini aims for Europe

Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini believes victory over Roma this weekend would be a big step towards Europe.

A four-match unbeaten run has seen Fiorentina climb to eighth in the table and a place in next year's Europa League is within reach.

"The game with Roma is worth a lot not just for the great rivalry that there is with them, but also because we can climb up the table," Gamberini said.
