Prandelli looks ahead to Spain

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli is eagerly anticipating the August friendly against Spain in order to understand the true strength of his side.

The Azzurri take on the Republic of Ireland in a test this evening, but the Coach is looking forward to the August 10 match against the European and world champions.

"I can't wait to play the glamour friendlies," the former Fiorentina tactician told RAI Sport on Tuesday.

"They are the kind of tests that can allow us to take a leap in quality that I expect and give my side a true dimension."

Prandelli: 'If we had to lose to anyone...'

Cesare Prandelli noted it was “fitting” the second defeat of his Italy reign should be against Giovanni Trapattoni.

Up until now, Prandelli had lost just once, the debut friendly against the Ivory Coast, and conceded a grand total of four goals.

“If we had to lose to anyone, it's fitting that it was him,” said the Coach after a 2-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland.

“We lacked intensity and depth, then we tried to get back into the game with the wrong approach.

Prandelli: 'Trap is beyond reach'

Cesare Prandelli hails Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni, having worked with him for six years, ahead of Italy's friendly on Tuesday.

“Trapattoni is a very special person for me and in many aspects beyond reach,” said the Azzurri boss. The game will be played on neutral turf in the Belgian city of Liege.

“In our six years together at Juventus, I learned so much from him in terms of football and also humanity. What he taught me has been very useful during my management career.”

Prandelli's progress

As Italy drew comparisons in playing style with the mighty Barcelona, Rob Paton looks at Cesare Prandelli's progress so far

"Italy's comfortable 3-0 win over Estonia on Friday night left both fans and media eulogising with a performance that even brought comparisons in style to Barcelona, current darlings of European football. Cesare Prandelli's philosophy and message since taking the helm have been of developing a more technically expressive style of play, and nowhere has it come closest to fruition during his spell than in Modena.

Prandelli: Not yet like Spain...

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli has cooled comparisons between his national side and world champions Spain.

The tactician is slowly changing the Azzurri's footballing philosophy since he replaced Marcello Lippi after World Cup 2010 disaster.

Recent performances and results have been good, the latest coming in last night's dominant 3-0 victory over Estonia.

"It's too soon to be talking about the Spain friendly in August," the Coach said at Coverciano on Saturday afternoon.

Prandelli: 'Better than expected...'

Cesare Prandelli admits he “didn't expect to be this far ahead at this stage” as Italy went five points clear in Euro 2012 qualifying.

“I am absolutely satisfied. We kept concentrated, played well and I'm happy,” he said of the 3-0 victory over Estonia.

The result means with six games played the Azzurri are on 16 points compared to Slovenia (11 points in seven games after tonight's 2-0 win away to the Faroe Islands), Serbia on eight and Estonia remain on seven.

Cassano-Rossi to lead Italy

Italy will face Estonia in Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier without a recognised centre-forward, boss Cesare Prandelli has confirmed.

The tactician has named his side for the Modena tie, but there is no target man despite the presence of Alberto Gilardino, Alessandro Matri and Giampaolo Pazzini in the squad.

"Buffon will be in goal, then Maggio, Ranocchia if he is fit – otherwise it will be Gamberini – Chiellini, Balzaretti, Pirlo, Montolivo, Marchisio, Aquilani, Cassano and Rossi," Prandelli revealed.

Maggio applauds Prandelli stance

Christian Maggio applauds Italy boss Cesare Prandelli's approach of calling only those who play regularly.

“Prandelli is absolutely right, as only by performing to a high standard regularly for your club can you earn the right to be called up for international duty,” said the Napoli winger.

“This is why I think I will always choose a team that allows me to play regularly, otherwise I'd miss out on opportunities like this.”
