Prandelli laments dearth of talent

Cesare Prandelli has once again lamented the lack of young talent coming through the ranks in Italy.

The Azzurri's catastrophic exit from the World Cup last summer prompted a reshuffle within the FIGC.

Arrigo Sacchi, Roberto Baggio and Gianni Rivera have since been appointed to improve the game at grassroots level.

"Only eight per cent of youngsters in our academies make it to the first team while years ago the figure was 25 per cent.

"Many teams prefer to go looking abroad."

Prandelli backs Cassano

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli doesn't believe Antonio Cassano will make any more mistakes in his career.

Prandelli stood by Cassano when Sampdoria asked that his contract be rescinded in October.

The 28-year-old didn't play for two months and Prandelli couldn't pick him for Italy.

Cassano has since joined Milan and is making a good impression at San Siro.

"He feels a great responsibility because he is becoming a father," Prandelli said.

Prandelli: 'Cassano, Balotelli and...'

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli has outlined a fascinating strategy for 2011. “Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano wide around two strikers.”

The tactician has said he'd like to adopt a more attacking system as confidence grows within the camp and revealed new plans for the future.

“The only path we must follow is one to bring the fans closer, excite them and bring out their passion,” Prandelli told the Corriere della Sera.

Prandelli: '2011 for Balo and Cassano'

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli looks at his first few months in charge and hopes “2011 can be the year of Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano.”

The tactician took charge after Marcello Lippi's side crashed out of the World Cup in South Africa in the first round.

“So far the overall balance has been positive, considering the way we started with scepticism and depression after the World Cup failure,” Prandelli told RAI Sport.

Prandelli: 'Azzurri must win back fans'

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli has told calcio and the Nazionale to “win back the people” after the second Marcello Lippi era.

“We have to put ourselves forward in the right way and win back the people rather than create a distance between us,” he told Italpress.

“We represent Italy and everyone should identify themselves in the Azzurri shirt. Both in Florence and Genoa we sensed a real warmth from the fans.”

Prandelli: 'I'm waiting for Cassano'

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli has told Antonio Cassano he's “waiting for him soon,” stood up for Mario Balotelli and hopes the strike will be called off.

Cassano was the focus of the new Azzurri squad, but as he is not playing due to a contract dispute with Sampdoria, he won't be called for international duty.

“I do not have any particular advice for Cassano. I only say that I'm waiting for him soon,” commented Prandelli.

Cassano met with Prandelli

Where was Antonio Cassano while his Sampdoria side were dumped out of Europe? He was dinning with Italy boss Cesare Prandelli.

Doria crashed out of the Europa League on Wednesday after defeat at home to PSV, but Cassano didn't watch.

Frozen out of the side after a row with President Riccardo Garrone, the club are now trying to rescind the player's contract.

Azzurri Coach Prandelli has insisted in recent times that he wouldn't abandon the international and his midweek meeting with the player confirms as much.

Prandelli: 'Mou did nothing wrong'

Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli says Jose Mourinho's Cardgate was “nothing any other tactician hasn't done” and commented on the Serie A strike.

UEFA suspended Mourinho and fined his Real Madrid players after it was found he ‘ordered' them to receive second yellow cards for time-wasting, therefore clearing the disciplinary record for the knockout phase.

“Everyone does it and there's nothing strange about it,” insisted Prandelli of that incident against Ajax.

Prandelli gets behind Benitez

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli has backed Rafa Benitez to turn things around at Inter amid calls for his dismissal.

Tonight's Champions League clash against FC Twente is said to be crucial in deciding Benitez's fate following a run of five games without a win, which has left Inter sixth in Serie A.

"I hope that Benitez isn't playing for his place in this evening's match," Prandelli said.

"He is a great tactician and a person of common sense too.

'Buffon could be a politician'

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli insists Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has what it takes to become a fine politician.

Buffon has yet to play this season following a surgical procedure on his back after the World Cup in South Africa.

Speaking to Radio 2, Prandelli said: "Among the footballers currently in activity I believe that Buffon has the personality to be a politician."

Buffon wouldn't be the first Italian footballer to begin a career in politics.

Milan legend Gianni Rivera has been relatively active in politics since 1994.
