Football Italia calcio quiz - Serie A 1997-98

Think you know your Capocannoniere from your catenaccio? Test your Serie A knowledge with Football Italia’s calcio quiz, 1997-98 edition!

1997-98 was the year Ronaldo came to Serie A – but the Brazil star couldn’t bring the Scudetto to San Siro. Instead, after a titanic battle with Inter, it was Juventus celebrating.

The Old Lady and the Nerazzurri went toe-to-toe for the duration of the season but arguably the pivotal moment came in April, when Juve beat their Milanese rivals in a game so controversial it led to a debate – and a scuffle – in the Chamber of Deputies. It wasn’t the first or last title race to go down in infamy.

Only in Serie A: Hubner the grappa guzzler

Who could forget the colourful career of Dario Hubner, the ageing ‘Bison’ who topped scoring charts in Serie A on a diet of grappa and cigarettes?

Words: Livio Caferoglu

The 2001-02 campaign was a memorable time for Italian strikers. Unlike now, where only three have scored more than 10 times in Serie A, back then there were 15. The one that ran out with the most goals – 24 of them in total – wasn’t a Christian Vieri, Filippo Inzaghi or Alessandro Del Piero, but rather a 35-year-old playing for Piacenza. His name was Dario Hubner.

Hubner: 'I'd sneak cigarettes and grappa'

Brescia and Piacenza legend Dario Hubner was known just as much for his off the field lifestyle as his Serie A goals. “My father would sneak cigarettes and home-made grappa into the training ground. I gave some to Al-Saadi Gaddafi once…”

The striker turns 53 later this month and found top flight success late in his career, above all when joint Capocannoniere with David Trezeguet on 24 goals in 2001-02.

“I’d smoke at least 20-25 Marlboro per day and I did it openly,” ‘The Bison’ told Quotidiano.net.

Football Italia calcio quiz - Serie A 2001-02

Think you know your Capocannoniere from your catenaccio? Test your Serie A knowledge with Football Italia’s calcio quiz, 2001-02 edition!

Another bout of last round drama was in store for the 2001-02 season as three teams went into the final day with a chance of claiming the Scudetto. Juventus eventually came out on top, beating champions Roma and Inter to the trophy, the Old Lady’s first title since 1997-98.

But Chievo were arguably the story of the season, as the Flying Donkeys took Serie A by storm. They led the table for six rounds before falling away – but still claimed a creditable fifth place in their debut Serie A campaign.

Trapani promoted to Serie B

Trapani are back in Serie B after winning the promotion play-offs against Piacenza.

The Sicilians drew 0-0 in the first leg at the Stadio Garilli, then won the home fixture 2-0 tonight with M’Bala Nzola and Anthony Taugourdeau goals.

They are promoted into Serie B for the 2019-19 season, joined by Virtus Entella, Pisa, Juve Stabia and Pordenone.

It's a remarkable achievement, considering Trapani players haven't been paid for months and sued the club for financial mismanagement.

Happy birthday, Super Pippo!

Today is the 45th birthday of former Juventus, Milan and Italy striker - and current Bologna Coach - Filippo Inzaghi.

Famously described by Sir Alex Ferguson as having been “born offside”, Super Pippo was in fact born in Piacenza, and he started his career with the Papaveri.

Following loan spells with AlbinoLeffe and Verona, the striker made his breakthrough with Piacenza in the 1994-95 season, scoring 15 goals in 37 Serie B games.

That form earned a move to Parma, but after one frustrating season Inzaghi was sold to Atalanta.

On This Day: Del Piero’s Piacenza goal

On this day in 2003, Alessandro Del Piero scored one of the best goals of his career as Juventus beat Piacenza 2-0 at the Stadio delle Alpi.

The Bianconeri were the defending champions, and had won three matches in a row going into the match.

However, Marcello Lippi’s side were sitting fourth when they kicked off against the Papaveri, the result of a wobble around November and December.

The Old Lady needed a win, and it was their captain who opened the scoring after just nine minutes.
