Witsel: So close to Juve

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel has revealed how close he was to joining Juventus. “I only had to sign the contract.”

Witsel to Juve was one of the longest-running transfer sagas throughout 2016, but the midfielder ended up leaving Zenit St Petersburg for Chinese club Tianjin Tianhai the following January.

He has now revealed that he even underwent a medical with the Bianconeri, only for Zenit to change his mind at the 11th hour.

Sassuolo: Toprak no, Tonelli yes?

Sassuolo have lost defensive target Omer Toprak to Werder Bremen, so they could now move for Napoli’s Lorenzo Tonelli.

Sassuolo seemed to be closing in on Toprak’s signature, but Bremen announced on Sunday that he had signed for them on loan with an option to buy.

Consequently, Tutto Napoli claims the Neroverdi could now step up their interest in Tonelli.

The 29-year-old is not in Carlo Ancelotti’s first-team plans, while Sampdoria opted not to make his season-long loan permanent.

Mandzukic one of a kind

Mario Mandzukic doesn’t appear to be part of Maurizio Sarri’s plans, but Vilizar Yakimov thinks Juventus would be wrong to lose the big Croat so easily.

After starting the summer mercato strongly, Juventus’ transfer dealings seem to be taking a strange twist.

The Bianconeri shipped Joao Cancelo to Manchester City in a swap deal that saw Danilo moving to Turin as well as €30mln entering the Old Lady’s bank account. While the Portugal international never really fulfilled his potential under Massimiliano Allegri, he was one of the players that were expected to thrive under Maurizio Sarri.

Schick 'rejects Newcastle for BVB'

Roma striker Patrik Schick has reportedly rejected a loan move to Newcastle United as he is holding out for Borussia Dortmund.

Schick is not in Roma’s squad to face Athletic Bilbao this evening, and Gianluca Di Marzio’s website claims he was the subject of an offer from Newcastle.

However, the Czech turned down the Magpies because his ‘desire’ is to join Dortmund.

The Germans have long been linked with the 23-year-old, whose face has not quite fit at Roma.

Dortmund commentators 'racist' to Italians

Borussia Dortmund have disciplined two commentators on their official streaming service for offensive anti-Italian statements during a friendly with Udinese.

After fans protested at the coverage on their BVB.tv service, the club told reporters that BVB stadium speaker Norbert Dickel and former player Patrick Owomoyela had “gone over the line.

“Their attempt to be funny went completely wrong and was absolutely out of place. Both parties have already acknowledged their wrongdoing and pledged this will not be repeated. They have been sanctioned.”
