Petrachi sorry for ‘little girls’ remark

Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi has apologised for describing football as “a man’s game, not a ballet class for little girls.”

Petrachi made the comments after Roma’s 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Sunday, when Nikola Kalinic had a goal chalked off for appearing to shove Fabio Pisacane.

Sarri not up for Best Men's Coach

Maurizio Sarri is not up for The Best FIFA Men’s Coach award, but CT Milena Bertolini is recognised for Italy’s historic run at the Women’s World Cup.

Sarri led Chelsea to Europa League glory last season, courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Premier League rivals Arsenal in the Final.

However, neither the current Juventus boss nor any other Italian Coach have been shortlisted for the men’s award.

Azzurre can't keep up with Holland

Italy capitulated to Holland and their own exhaustion, but Andrea Tallarita believes this Women’s World Cup opened up a new era.

And so it happened: the fatigue conundrum, which had been dogging the Azzurre from at least their third game in the Women's World Cup , finally caught up with them. Against a Dutch team with higher firepower but lower fortifications, the Italians held their own honourably for one half of the game, and then succumbed to the team that was able to keep the highest pace for the longest stretch of time.

WWC: Italy head out to Netherlands

Italy’s adventure in the Women’s World Cup came to an end with a 2-0 quarter-final defeat to two Netherlands headers.

The Azzurre brought Aurora Galli into the starting XI after her goal in the Round of 16 against China, but Italy were once again the underdogs against the reigning European Champions. Curiously, the game took place 19 years to the day since Italy beat Holland on penalties in the Euro 2000 semi-final, complete with Francesco Totti Panenka spot-kick.

The Great Wall of the Women's World Cup

Italy defeating China was an impressive outcome, but Andrea Tallarita believes that in this Women's World Cup the real test of might is only just beginning.

It really would have taken a small miracle for China to beat Italy. The ladies from the Far East had a well-organised squad, but their greatest weakness coincided with the Azzurre's outstanding strength: having scored only once in their three games to that point, the Chinese were as bad at banging goals in as our girls are at keeping them out.

Since Italy has also shown some considerable attacking prowess, it seemed natural – all tactical permutations aside – to expect the girls in blue to outscore their opponents, and this is exactly what happened.

WWC: Azzurre knock China out

Italy stormed through to the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals after a 2-0 victory over China, with goals from Valentina Giacinti and Aurora Galli.

The Azzurre broke through early on in this Round of 16 tie when Giacinti pounced on a defensive error to spark the Barbara Bonansea counter and then finished the move from Elisa Bartoli’s cross.

There was a VAR check that decided China would not receive a penalty for Sara Gama’s challenge on Wang Shuang, while Laura Giuliani was crucial with her save on the same player.

Azzurre impress against Brazil

The 1-0 loss to Brazil didn't compromise Italy's Women's World Cup campaign, writes Andrea Tallarita, as they keep getting better with each game.

This may have been the best possible result for Italy. The 1-0 loss to Brazil means the girls will not grow overconfident, the contentious nature of the decisive penalty means they should not get demoralised, and their final placement at the top of Group C means they will reap the highest advantage going into the last 16.

WWC: Italy win group despite defeat

Italy qualified for the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup as group winners, despite a 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

Italy came into the match in a commanding position after a last-gasp win against Australia on the opening matchday and a 4-0 thrashing of Jamaica.

Milena Bertolini started all three Azzurre goalscorers Barbara Bonansea, Cristiana Girelli and Aurora Galli, but none of them proved effective against Brazil.

Despite that, they were the better team in the first half, forcing Selecao goalkeeper Barbara into a couple of key saves.

WWC: Italy qualify for last 16!

Italy have qualified for the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup, courtesy of a record-equalling 5-0 victory over Jamaica.

Italy just needed a win to make sure of their place in the next round after Brazil’s 3-2 defeat to Australia on Thursday.

They went on to blow Jamaica away as Juventus striker Cristiana Girelli netted a hat-trick and substitute Aurora Galli bagged a second-half brace.

Fortune did favour the Azzurre for their first goal as Girelli was allowed to retake her penalty, Jamaica goalkeeper Sydney Schneider having encroached.
