No Lanterna at end of Genoa tunnel

These are worrying times for Genoa and Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall tries to make sense of the mess in Liguria.

Forget criticising Thiago Motta for the 2-7-1 formation. The idea is a sound one and is nothing more than how the team would be set out if offensively when in possession. It is basically a 3-4-2-1 out of possession and something Pep Guardiola has often used. The fact is, Motta did not stand a chance at Genoa, neither would Mikel Arteta, Fabio Grosso or any other up and coming coach one can think of. That is simply because the environment Motta had to work in reeked of short termism and desperation.

Three in, four out for Genoa?

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi is initiating a mini-revolution at the club, it is claimed, starting with the signing of Milan’s Fabio Borini.

Preziosi recently sacked Thiago Motta after only two months in the job, replacing him with former Crotone and Udinese boss Davide Nicola.

Now, Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira states the club is set to offload four players, with three coming in.

Milan forward Borini would to be the first player to arrive, followed by Belgrano defender Bruno Amione and Viktoria Plzen attacker Michael Krmencik.

Reina: 'Experience helped me'

Pepe Reina made up for his howler by saving a stoppage-time penalty as Milan beat Genoa 2-1. “Experience helped me stay concentrated.”

The goalkeeper was not supposed to play at Marassi on Saturday night, but was a last-minute starter when Gianluigi Donnarumma felt ill during the warm-up.

Andreazzoli: 'Genoa made naive errors'

Genoa Coach Aurelio Andreazzoli felt they did not deserve the 2-1 defeat to Milan. “We made naïve errors and in a couple of minutes threw it away.”

It was a chaotic match, as Pepe Reina’s howler had let in a Lasse Schone free kick, then Theo Hernandez fired in from a tight angle after a quick free kick and moments later, Davide Biraschi saw red on the Franck Kessie penalty.

Deep into stoppages, Reina saved a penalty from Schone, with both teams down to 10 men.

Schone loving Genoa life

Former Ajax midfielder Lasse Schone says he is loving life at Genoa and playing in ‘beautiful’ Serie A.

Schone surprisingly swapped the Champions League semi-finals and an Eredivisie title with Ajax for a Genoa side in transition, but the Dane insists he was right to make the move.

“I didn’t plan to leave Ajax,” the 33-year-old was quoted as saying by ANSA.

“I thought I’d look around and see if there could be a new challenge for me.

Rejuvenation of Genoa

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall believes Genoa have turned a corner and Aurelio Andreazzoli can revive this great club.

In years gone by, Genoa would not have been able to come back against Roma. In seasons past, they would not have been able to hold out to beat Fiorentina, but this team is different. With a new Coach, a good summer transfer window and a playing style that is impressive, albeit early in its evolution, there are reasons for the fans to be excited. There will be bumps along the way, but nobody would put them among the relegation candidates. This could be an entertaining campaign, despite the club being up for sale.

Schone: Genoa are fantastic!

Lasse Schone says the start to his Genoa career has been ‘fantastic’ and is backing his side to impress this season.

Schone helped Ajax reach the Champions League semi-finals and win another Eredivisie title last season but traded that all in for a two-year contract with Genoa, who just about avoided relegation.

“For me it’s a new adventure, even more so considering my age,” the midfielder said at a Press conference.
