Serie B: Monza held by Pescara, Empoli-Chievo not played

Monza were held to a 1-1 home draw by Pescara in Serie B, while Empoli-Chievo was not played although the visitors turned up to the Stadio Castellani.

Empoli have 11 players and two staff members positive for COVID, and their previous game against Cremonese had been postponed.

That used up their only ‘free pass’ predicted by the COVID protocol.

Empoli COVID outbreak spreads rapidly

The COVID outbreak at Serie B leaders Empoli has exploded, as after the senior squad, now 16 in the Primavera youth team test positive.

The situation had already become so serious that the entire senior squad and staff were banned from training.

A statement this afternoon confirms 16 people between players and staff in the Primavera youth team squad have tested positive for COVID-19.

The club notes local health authorities believe the outbreak is so rapid and severe because it involves one of the variants of the virus.

COVID outbreak at Empoli

Serie B leaders Empoli have had to request the postponement of two games after COVID cases sparked a quarantine order from the local health authority.

There is a new outbreak of Coronavirus at the club, although the number of players and members of staff who tested positive has not been confirmed.

A statement from Empoli FC noted they had received an order to suspend all training and go into quarantine for 10 days, until April 7.

That means they must request the postponement of Serie B matches against Cremonese on Friday and Chievo next Monday.

Dionisi to Napoli, Gattuso for Fiorentina?

A new name is on the radar for Napoli, specifically Empoli coach Alessio Dionisi, while Gennaro Gattuso is linked with Fiorentina.

It seems all but certain that Gattuso will leave the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at the end of the season, as his rapport with President Aurelio De Laurentiis remains fractious.

Eder moves to Sao Paulo

Former Italy international Eder returns to Brazil, as he has signed a deal with Sao Paulo until December 2022.

The former Inter striker was recently released by Chinese side Jiangsu Suning and Sao Paulo have confirmed the move on their official website.

The Brazilian-born 34-year-old, capped 26 times by Italy, played 245 games in Serie A across spells with Empoli, Cesena, Brescia, Inter and Sampdoria.

He scored 60 times in the Italian League, but left for China in July 2018.

COVID spreading in Serie B

COVID-19 cases are spreading rapidly, in Serie B, with an outbreak confirmed at Pordenone and new cases at leaders Empoli.

Pordenone already had last weekend’s game with Pisa postponed due to the number of players and staff testing positive for the Coronavirus.

The outbreak status was confirmed today with another two positive tests, taking the total number to 12.

Meanwhile, Serie B leaders Empoli also cancelled today’s training session after announcing that another two elements in the matchday squad tested positive.

Empoli 'kept identity' against Napoli

Empoli assistant manager Paolo Cozzi maintains they ‘achieved our objective’ in a 3-2 Coppa Italia defeat to Napoli. ‘We didn’t lose our identity.’

The Serie B side were forced to leave three players and coach Alessio Dionisi at the team hotel because they were in close contact with someone who had COVID-19, even though they repeatedly tested negative.
