Inzaghi 'bitter' despite win

Simone Inzaghi is glad Lazio have “one last chance” in the Europa League but is also “bitter. We didn’t deserve to leave it all until the final matchday.”

Lazio looked to be all-but-out of the Europa League but can yet qualify in two weeks’ time after they beat CFR Cluj 1-0 on Thursday, although they were made to ride their luck at times.

“We have one last chance,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

Correa earns lucky Lazio reprieve

Joaquin Correa gave lucky Lazio a Europa League reprieve as they beat CFR Cluj 1-0 to keep their slim hopes of a last-32 place alive.

Thomas Strakosha, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile were all left at home, so Bobby Adekanye - a summer signing from Liverpool - was given his full debut in Lazio's attack.

Cluj only needed a draw to reach the last 32, compared to the Aquile's quest for six points from their final two group games, and it showed as they sought to sit back.

Line-ups: Lazio-CFR Cluj

Bobby Adekanye makes a rare start against CFR Cluj for Lazio, who are without Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Lazio have to make up six points in their final two Europa League group games to stand any chance of reaching the last 32.

However, they do not seem at all concerned about progressing as their two talisman are left out completely, as is goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.

Probable line-ups: Lazio-Cluj

Simone Inzaghi is expected to rest Ciro Immobile for Joaquin Correa and Felipe Caicedo when Lazio face CFR Cluj in the Europa League this evening.

The Belgian 36-year-old Silvio Proto will most likely get the nod in goal, as ever-present Thomas Strakosha is out with a fever, and Jony might get a chance to impress the coach on the flank.

Their leading goal scorer Ciro Immobile looks like he will be rested, and despite a recent niggling injury, Felipe Caicedo might get the call to partner Joaquin Correa up front in a 3-5-2 formation against the Romanian side.

Lazio deja vu in Glasgow

Should we be surprised by Lazio’s collapse against Celtic? Vilizar Yakimov warns they’ve been doing this way too often and will probably do it again.

In case you were jumping through the channels last night and saw Lazio wasting another 1-0 lead in the Europa League, you probably thought you were watching a replay of the game against Cluj.

From a Lazio perspective, the game against Celtic was an exact copy of their defeat against the Romanian champions that came a few weeks ago. Just like with Cluj, the Biancocelesti took the lead in the first half at Celtic Park, but their intensity and concentration decreased drastically towards the end of the game, which allowed the hosts to complete an epic comeback.

Probable line-ups: Cluj-Lazio

Lazio will be without Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto for their Europa League curtain-raiser at CFR Cluj this evening.

Simone Inzaghi has elected to rest the two forwards, preferring to keep them fresh for Lazio’s Serie A match against Parma on Sunday.

Their places in the Aquile’s two-pronged attack should be taken Felipe Caicedo and Joaquin Correa.

Elsewhere, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic will start as usual in midfield, alongside new signings Denis Vavro, Manuel Lazzari and Jony Rodriguez.

Inzaghi: 'More Champions than Europa'

Simone Inzaghi has a limited Lazio squad against Cluj and warns this group “is more at the level of the Champions League than Europa League.”

It kicks off on Thursday at 17.55 UK time (16.55 GMT), as part of a group with Celtic and Rennes.

“This is a tough group, more at the level of the Champions League than Europa League,” warned the Coach in his Press conference.

Roma & Lazio learn EL fate

Roma are paired with Borussia Monchengladbach in the Europa League group stage, while Lazio have a mini group of death with Celtic and Stade Rennais.

Roma were given a bye into the group stage after Milan pulled out of the competition and Torino took their place in the playoffs.

Capitalising on their Pot 1 status, they have been drawn Monchengladbach, Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir and Austrian outfit Wolfsberger in Group J.
