Spadafora: 'Serie A was nearly called off'

The 2019-20 Serie A season concludes this evening, but Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora confirms the Government ‘genuinely thought it would be called off.’

Italy was the first European country to be hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore also the first league to lock down in March, followed swiftly by the other major divisions.

While Ligue 1 was halted early and never resumed, Serie A did eventually get back on track in June.

Spadafora: 'Forget fans in stadiums for now'

As the new COVID-19 cases continue to grow in Italy as well as Europe, Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora warns it’s ‘outside the realms of reality’ to assume fans in the stadium next season.

The Lega Serie A had hoped to get at least season ticket holders in for the final round this weekend, but it now seems as if even the planned September 12 restart is unlikely.

Spadafora: 'Fans can return in September'

Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora confirms ‘we should be able to see fans in the stadiums come September’ with COVID-19 social distancing measures.

The Serie A, B and Coppa Italia matches have all been played behind closed doors since the lockdown in early March and return to the field in June.

“If the epidemiological curve allows, we should be able to see fans in the stadiums come September,” Spadafora told Radio Rai.

Spadafora works to reopen stadiums 'in September'

Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora has revealed he is working to bring fans back in September, claiming it would be ‘too difficult to organise’ it prior to the end of the current campaign.

The Minister has urged to continue the cautious approach that has ‘allowed us to resume’ and has pointed out that him, the Minister of Health and the Technical and Scientific Committee are working on reopening for spectators in September.

'FIGC right to investigate Atalanta'

Minister Vincenzo Spadafora has commended the FIGC for investigating Atalanta’s team manager after he discriminated against a Napoli fan.

Last week was not a good week for Italian sport in its fight against discrimination, starting with Paralympic athlete Beatrice Ion.

Ion, who plays for Italy’s wheelchair basketball team and is of Romanian extract, was racially abused by a passer-by, while her father was assaulted for trying to defend her.

Official: Quarantine rule softened

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora and Minister for Health Roberto Speranza have signed the paperwork approving the ‘softer’ quarantine rules for COVID-19 cases.

The Serie A, B and C medical protocol was far stricter than the one used in Germany, England or Spain, causing controversy and complaints that the season could grind to a halt immediately after restarting.

Spadafora: 'Can't just change the rules'

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora has warned that while the CTS is in favour of scrapping the two-week quarantine, the rules cannot just be changed.

Doubts have arisen over the restart of Serie B after Venezia reported a positive case of coronavirus in their squad.

Although the government’s technical scientific committee (CTS) supports reducing the length of time teams stay in isolation, the law must be amended first, as Spadafora explained.

Spadafora: 'Free-to-air games close'

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora has revealed that an agreement for some Serie A matches to be made free-to-air in Italy is ‘on the right track’.

Sky and DAZN split the rights to show live Serie A matches on the peninsula, but Spadafora is confident a deal will be struck so Rai or Mediaset may get a ‘few’ of the remaining 2019-20 fixtures.

“We’re on the right track towards finding an agreement that suits everyone,” he said during a Facebook broadcaster.
