Coronavirus state of play in Europe

As the FIGC fights to resume Serie A football in May, we assess the state of play in the other top European competitions.

The FIGC is pushing through with plans for training to start again on May 4, when Italy is expected to begin easing its coronavirus response, with a view to recommencing fixtures by early June.

Sarri reveals Chelsea 'conflict'

Maurizio Sarri admits he had a “conflicted” relationship with Chelsea’s players and “would never live” in England but that he “misses” the Premier League.

Sarri led Chelsea to Champions League qualification and won the Europa League with them in 2019-20, but he made a swift return to Italy with Juventus last summer.

“The higher you go up the ladder, the harder it is to build personal relationships with your players,” the 61-year-old told Juve’s official YouTube channel.

PL: 'Committed to ending season'

The Premier League has confirmed that it “remains our objective” to complete the season, without setting a date for its return.

All 20 Premier League clubs held a meeting on Friday, where they were expected to explore the possibility of resuming the campaign on June 30.

However, the English top flight has now announced in a statement that only ‘scheduling models’ came up for discussion.

Report: Everton in Allan talks

Napoli midfielder Allan could be on his way to reunite with Carlo Ancelotti at Everton, who are reportedly in talks with his agent.

The Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolò Schira claims the Brazilian midfielder has received an offer of €6m a year plus bonuses from the Toffees.

Allan was one of Ancelotti’s most trusted men at the San Paolo and the former Partenopei coach could be the key to convince the 29-year-old of a move to Goodison Park.

Newcastle in for Allegri?

Newcastle United are linked with a surprise move for former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, according to SportMediaset.

Saudi Arabian Mohammad bin Salman’s investment group are allegedly close to taking over the Magpies and according to the Italian outlet, they have put Allegri at the top of their wish list.

SportMediaset claims Allegri could eventually end up in the Premier League after his sabbatical year away from football and reveals the Saudi Prince has great ambitions for the Tynesiders.

Mkhi: 'Sassuolo my best goal'

Roma attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan has revealed his ‘best goal’ for the Giallorossi came against Sassuolo in his first game for the club.

The Arsenal loanee has scored six times and contributed three assists in his 13 Serie A games for Roma, but the debut against the Neroverdi remains his favourite moment.

“My best goal so far with Roma was the one at Sassuolo in my first game,” the 31-year-old said on Twitter. “Because it was my debut and I was very excited.

Juventus and Napoli are reportedly in talks with Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri’s agent, after learning that the Blues are preparing to replace the defender.

La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolò Schira reports that the Premier League club will be willing to sell the Italy international for an amount between €25m and €30m and claims the player’s representatives have been in touch with both the Bianconeri and the Partenopei from Serie A.

Report: Roma prepare Pedro offer

Roma are reportedly stepping up their interest in Chelsea winger Pedro and have allegedly drafted a deal worth €3m a year plus bonuses for the Spaniard.

The former Barcelona player looks set to leave Chelsea after the current campaign, as the 32-year-old has only appeared nine times in the Premier League under Frank Lampard.

His current deal expires in June and the Corriere dello Sport claims Roma have prepared an offer of €3m a year plus bonuses to tempt the former Spain international with a move to the Eternal City.

IFAB clarify handball and VAR protocol

The IFAB has announced changes to the handball rule for the 2020-21 season and warned “where a reviewable incident is subjective, the expectation is that the referee will undertake an on-field review.”

The International Football Association Board released a statement with the main changes to the laws of the game and further clarification for incidents such as handball.

This caused a great deal of confusion and controversy this season, so there is specific explanation of the caveats surrounding ‘accidental’ handball.

Marino: 'Premier League to announce it's over'

Udinese director Pierpaolo Marino – whose club shares owners with Watford – revealed this evening that “the Premier League is about to announce its season is over.”

The comment came after Belgium’s Jupiler League declared it would not resume following the coronavirus pandemic, although Club Brugge had already been crowned champions anyway.

“The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from UEFA,” Marino told Sportitalia.
