Napoli create COVID 'bubble' in Barcelona

Coronavirus cases continue to climb in Spain, so Napoli are going to extreme measures to protect their squad and staff in Barcelona.

The Champions League Round of 16 concludes at Camp Nou on Saturday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

Despite Napoli protestations, UEFA have ruled it can go ahead behind closed doors in Catalunya, one of the worst-affected areas by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Italians are still taking a very cautious approach, as Tuttosport notes they will be kept in a ‘bubble’ throughout the journey.

Spadafora: 'Serie A was nearly called off'

The 2019-20 Serie A season concludes this evening, but Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora confirms the Government ‘genuinely thought it would be called off.’

Italy was the first European country to be hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore also the first league to lock down in March, followed swiftly by the other major divisions.

While Ligue 1 was halted early and never resumed, Serie A did eventually get back on track in June.

ADL: 'Unleash Hell' in Barcelona

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis warns he will ‘unleash Hell’ if his players or staff catch COVID-19 in the Champions League trip to Barcelona.

While the virus is relatively contained now in Italy, it is spiking again in Spain, above all in the Catalunya region.

Nonetheless, UEFA continue to assure there’s no need to move the Round of 16 second leg tie from Camp Nou on August 8.

Spadafora: 'Forget fans in stadiums for now'

As the new COVID-19 cases continue to grow in Italy as well as Europe, Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora warns it’s ‘outside the realms of reality’ to assume fans in the stadium next season.

The Lega Serie A had hoped to get at least season ticket holders in for the final round this weekend, but it now seems as if even the planned September 12 restart is unlikely.
