The Argentine arrived at the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome to begin the process.
He is expected to make the move to Russia in a deal worth €25m.
It was originally meant to be a double swoop with Kostas Manolas, but the centre-back did not turn up to his medical and then pulled out of the transfer.
