A visibly-irate Antonio Conte again called on Chelsea’s board to sanction more signings after their defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday.

Chelsea have spent almost €150m this summer, but only four new players have come in and Conte made no secret of his disappointment that the Blues had not strengthened further after the game.

“I have always replied to this question. I hope in the future to have different questions, than if there is necessity to improve our squad,” said the former Juventus and Italy boss.

“I have replied. My reply is always [this] one, otherwise it means I was telling you a lie. I repeat always the same.”

Conte then expressed his “anger” at how the match unfolded, which saw Pedro Rodriguez sent off, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois miss Chelsea’s second spot-kick and recent arrival Alvaro Morata also flunk his lines.

“For sure, there is disappointment to finish for the second time with 10 men against Arsenal, before the FA Cup and now the Community Shield,” he added.

“I did not see the images [for the Pedro red card] and I did not see the yellow card for Willian.

“A lot of people told me the penalty was clear, so for sure there is a bit of frustration.

“We have to respect the refereeing decision but sometimes this decision makes you a bit angry.

“He [Madley] tried to explain to me about his decision but there was not time because I also wanted to ask him why there wasn’t a penalty and the yellow card for Willian. But then we would have spoken until 9 o’clock.

“If there is a player that shows you in the training session to be one of the best, you pick him.

“Do not forget also that Morata is a forward and he did the same. Morata needs to work but it is normal. He has trained with us for only one week.

“It is very important to find a good physical condition and understand our idea of football. He needs a bit of time, but it is normal.

“In six days, we have to start the league, but now the most important thing is to continue to work and try to improve the team.”
