“We know that Chievo are a tough opponent and last season’s home defeat to them still hurts. We’ve prepared well, learned from that and want all three points,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“It’s going to be a bad pitch in torrid heat. We want to play well and see a Lazio side hungry for the result. The Super Cup win over Juventus was a great game, but we’ve got to leave that behind now and focus on the present.

“This year we tried to begin the journey with the 3-5-2 formation, which was used quite a lot last season too, and for the moment we’ll continue like this. Chievo will lock down the spaces, so we must play quickly and move it around to open up spaces. We were too sluggish against Spal.”

Inzaghi was inevitably frustrated by off the field issues, as Wesley Hoedt completed his transfer to Southampton this week and Keita Balde Diao is on strike amid a contract dispute.

“After the Chievo match, there will be the final few days of the transfer market. We’ll be playing every three days until at least Christmas, so we need to replace Hoedt and Keita.

“We need to complete the squad, because it’s going to be a long and tiring campaign, but we don’t have the numbers. The club and director know what roles need to be covered.

“We could’ve done without the Felipe Anderson knee injury too and the medics are working to have him back at 100 per cent as soon as possible. We’ll have to see how he develops day by day.”

As for the defence, Inzaghi dropped a big hint that Milan’s Gabriel Paletta is his favoured choice.

“We have talked about Paletta, he has been in Italy for a long time and has experience, so he’d be ready to use straight away. It’d be important to get an experienced player who doesn’t need time to settle in.”

The Aquile are in the Europa League, drawn in a group with Mario Balotelli’s Nice, Vitesse and Zulte Waregem.

“It’s a competitive group and the draw could’ve been better for us, as there were less prestigious sides in the running. I gladly would’ve avoided Vitesse, who are leading the Dutch table.”
