The former Roma, Juventus and Leicester City boss is one of the main candidates for the role after Giampiero Ventura was fired in November.

“Any Italian Coach would love to be in charge of the Nazionale,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I have a contract with Nantes for two years and I have not received any messages, so I can’t say anything. But if I were to be contacted for the Italy job, I’d go to the Nantes President and ask to be released.”

Current Italy Under-21 boss Gigi Di Biagio has taken over on an interim basis and could recall Mario Balotelli, who is lighting up Ligue 1 with Nice.

“Balotelli has a great deal of quality and still has a lot to give to the Nazionale. In France, he has a team with tons of potential. Nice play very well, he receives the ball in the right place at the right time, and few know how to finish like him.”
