Sky Sport Italia insist Luka Modric and his agents will again beg Real Madrid to let him leave for Inter on Thursday.

The Croatia international came off the bench to play in this evening’s 4-2 UEFA Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid in Tallinn, decided in extra time.

This heavy loss may well act as further motivation for Modric to seek a new challenge, and for Real Madrid to find a top star new replacement.

Their target is Christian Eriksen, but Tottenham Hotspur are demanding €200m.

Ahead of tonight’s game, Merengues director Emilio Butragueno assured there was “no Modric issue. He is happy to continue with us.”

However, that isn’t the version of events in the Italian media.

The Serie A transfer window shuts on Friday at 19.00 UK time (18.00 GMT).
