The Bianconeri were 1-0 up at the time thanks to Alessandro Del Piero’s goal and though he later missed a penalty, they held on for a 1-0 win.

The Old Lady went on to lift the Serie A title that year, and Beneamata fans have long claimed that they would have taken the title if not for that decision.

“Comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo always made me laugh,” the Brazilian told Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Friday’s Derby d’Italia.

“However, I say ‘no’: it makes no sense. We’re so different, him and I. Above all, there’s nine years of difference between us.

“We played in different eras. Football has changed quickly and it’s changing more and more quickly.

“I don’t want to say that ‘my time’ was more difficult, but we faced very different situations with different teams.

“Juve-Inter’s one of those matches where a team can gain much more than just points. It reminds me of Juve-Inter in 1998.

“We were going for the Scudetto, and while this Inter side aren’t right now, we’re going to face them with that courage and look for confirmation of our growth.

“Spalletti’s Inter must go to Turin with that bravery. After that, the game will pan out as it pans out.

“It’s been so long and we’ve talked so many times about it… it’s already been 20 years, a lifetime ago.

“What happened was a disgrace. I said it at the time and I didn’t know anything else, but it was also a different era for Italian football…”
