Large groups of fans walked out early, while around 1,000 gathered outside the stadium to chant slogans against club owners the Della Valle brothers.

“A strong protest is only to be expected and we accept it,” said team manager Guerini.

“The club believes it is opportune to talk to the squad, lick our wounds and find a way out of this terrible situation.”

There are reports that Coach Rossi has either resigned or will be fired in the next 24 hours.

“No, I’ve been with Rossi all evening and he was disappointed, but did not resign and we do not intend to lose him. He is an experienced Coach and we are all sad at this heavy defeat to historic rivals.

“We’ve got to work now in order to save the season and stay in Serie A, which is the most important thing.”

Alessio Cerci was sent off after just 21 minutes and Guerini warned “action will be taken, as per the club rules.

“Andrea Della Valle has been with us since Friday. He spoke to the team and the Coach, as he was the first to be disappointed by this defeat.”
