Napoli’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League again have been hit by an injury to Christian Maggio.

The Italian international, a key player for the Azzurri, limped out of Wednesday’s 2-0 Coppa Italia win over Siena after just 41 minutes.

After damaging his ankle against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week, the former Sampdoria player has picked up an injury to his left thigh.

Initial tests are indicating that the player, who hopes to be part of Euro 2012, will be sidelined for the next month.

“Maggio is someone who is good defensively and someone who can drive past his opponents,” Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri noted.

“Nobody has the characteristics that he possesses.

“A change of system to cope without him? I don’t think that would be the best option for the team. We’ll just have to take it game by game and decide on what tactics to adopt.”

Wing-back Maggio, 20, has scored three goals in 26 Serie A games for the club this term.

Napoli are currently fourth in the standings, just one point away from the last Champions League qualifying spot.
