The iconic defender was expected to take up a fresh challenge after a decade at Milanello, but the Corriere dello Sport suggests that both the player and club could benefit from a fresh one-year deal being agreed.

Nesta, 36, has found concrete offers for his services hard to come by since announcing he would leave Milan.

A proposed move to American side New York Red Bulls hasn’t materialised and the opportunity to join World Cup winning Coach Marcello Lippi in China with Guangzhou has also stalled.

Milan, meanwhile, have struggled to identify a replacement for their outgoing centre-back.

Chievo’s Francesco Acerbi, their first-choice, is still no closer to opening negotiations with the Rossoneri given that his co-ownership status with Genoa has still not been resolved.

As a result, Milan could look back to Nesta to try and convince him to play on for 12 more months.
