Just 45 minutes after Davide Astori’s move to Spartak Moscow seemed just a signature away from completion, Massimo Cellino has blocked it.
The 25-year-old had reportedly agreed, after some consideration, to join the Russian Premier League outfit in a deal that would have seen the Sardinians handed €12m in cash straight away and a further €3m in bonuses at the end of 2012-13.
However, just as reports indicated Astori’s signature on a €2m-a-season, four-year contract and his medical were mere formalities, Cagliari President Cellino has apparently vetoed the deal, infuriating Moscow officials who were meeting with sporting director Francesco Marroccu in Milan.
Astori has played 108 times for Cagliari in four years and is not short of admirers in Serie A.
