Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has taken a swipe at Juventus’ fight for their Calciopoli titles, but admits his side are missing an Andrea Pirlo like player.
Juve insist that last season’s League success was their 30th, but records show it was only their 28th after their two revoked championships from 2005 and 2006.
Roma boss Zdenek Zeman has poked fun at the Bianconeri by insisting that Juve’s titles should be even fewer than that and Allegri has now had his say.
“Juventus’ titles are 31,” he stated with a touch of irony. “They won the championship in Serie B didn’t they…
“The truth is that everyone is making a mistake – 28, 30, 31, 24, 25…Enough is enough. There is a body which will rule on it.
“It is useless to continue discussing such a matter.”
Juventus pipped the Diavolo to the title last season, but Allegri is convinced that his team will be able to challenge again.
“My Milan is strong and competitive,” he added. “I have no doubts about that. I’m happy with the squad as it is now.
“Are we missing something? Anything can happen between now and August 31 on the market. If we could get someone then I’d like a playmaker in front of the defence.”
That comment will be jumped on by Juventus fans seeing as Milan had Andrea Pirlo in such a role before the decision to release him to the Turin giants on a free transfer last summer.
“Milan offered Pirlo a one-year deal and Juventus offered him a three-year deal. He went to a place which gave him a new motivation.”
Milan have brought in Riccardo Montolivo on a Bosman from Fiorentina this summer and Allegri insists he can offer versatility.
“He’s certainly not a trequartista,” he added. “But he can play in any of the three midfield positions that we use.”
Milan were penalised by injuries last season, but they could still rely on the brilliance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“I’d like to have Alexandre Pato and Antonio Cassano 100 per cent fit this time around,” the former Cagliari boss continued.
“Is Manchester City's Mario Balotelli better than Ibra? Zlatan is the best attacker in the world and there is no doubt about that. I wouldn’t swap him with anyone else.”
