Del Neri was axed last night following the 2-0 home loss to Catania which left the Rossoblu in the relegation zone.
Genoa are third from bottom, three points adrift of Pescara and Cagliari.
Ballardini has already had a spell as Genoa boss during the 2010-11 campaign. He won 11, drew seven and lost 10 of his 28 League games in charge.
Genoa travel to League leaders Juventus this weekend.
