Roy Hodgson will later today name his England squad to take to the World Cup, with Ashley Cole confirmed as the first high profile omission.
The Three Lions, who open their campaign this summer in Group D against Italy, will today name an intended 23 players to take to Brazil and seven stand-bys.
Ashley Cole announced on Twitter that he has not made the cut, before confirming it also meant his retirement from international football.
The 107-cap veteran revealed that Luke Shaw and Leighton Baines will make former Inter Coach Hodgson’s squad in his place.
Speculation is that Wayne Rooney, Jack Wilshere and Phil Jones will be included despite initial injury fears, but that Kyle Walker will miss out. Theo Walcott and Andros Townsend are already unavailable through injury.
