Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne believes his side’s season has been a success but wants them to aim higher in future.
Rafa Benitez took over the Azzurri last summer and has overseen a Coppa Italia victory and a third placed Serie A finish in his first season at San Paolo.
“We have had a great season,” Insigne said at a publicity event today. “But we hoped to achieve something more.
“The fans know that. We were aiming for the Scudetto, but we have qualified for the Champions League and won the Coppa Italia. Next year we will be aiming high.
“We want to fight for the Scudetto. This season we have come third, behind Roma and Juventus who have been extremely strong.”
The young forward then commented on his call-up to Cesare Prandelli’s provisional World Cup squad, which was announced yesterday.
“The call-up is a dream. Prandelli has included me on the list and I am very happy about it. Now I need to convince him to take me to Brazil.
“I haven’t played that much but I have always tried my best and put myself at Benitez’s disposal.
“For me it has been a good season. Prandelli doesn’t only look at who is scoring, but also at who is playing for the team.
“On Monday I will go to Coverciano, so fingers crossed. Verratti and Immobile? I still haven’t spoken to them but I hope to go to Brazil with them.”
Finally, Insigne was asked to compare former Partenopei striker Edinson Cavani to current talisman Gonzalo Higuain.
“Cavani and Higuain are more or less equal. Cavani lived to score goals but Higuain is also good defensively. I wish luck to both of them.
“Our attack at Napoli is very young and we are doing well. We want to go far and make our fans happy.”
