There was also wonderful news for the entire Italian football world, as defender Acerbi confirmed he has beaten cancer for the second time.

The 25-year-old was first diagnosed during a routine medical when he first joined Sassuolo in June 2013, then a doping test in December showed unusually high levels of a hormone that turned out to be caused by another testicular tumour.

“I was able to maintain my smile thanks to the affection of the fans, colleagues and friends who stayed close to me.

“If my parents had seen me distraught, it would’ve been the worst thing, as they could not have given me the strength I needed in those moments.”

Acerbi will be able to begin pre-season training with the rest of the team.
