Speculation is that Giancarlo Abete’s future as Italian Football Federation President depends on Italy’s World Cup progress.

The Azzurri head into this afternoon’s closing Group D clash with Uruguay aware that a win or a draw will book them a place in the Round of 16 of the competition.

However, a defeat to La Celeste would see the South Americans advance through with Costa Rica instead of Cesare Prandelli’s side.

However, a defeat to La Celeste would see the South Americans advance through with Costa Rica instead of Cesare Prandelli’s side.

The Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that the scenario of a first round elimination would place FIGC chief Abete under scrutiny and likely see him removed from his position.

The FIGC are next due to meet in mid-August when it is believed a resolution on how to move forward will be reached – if Italy don’t make it out of the group stages, current Vice-President Demetrio Albertini and Simone Perrotta are listed as possible candidates to come in and replace Abete.

Abete has been President since April 2007 and in January of last year was re-elected to the post until 2017.
