Erick Thohir has explained that he would rather sign players useful to Inter’s project than big names that could ‘cast shadows’.

The Nerazzurri are seen as in talks for Gary Medel, Dani Osvaldo and potentially Javier Hernandez, but their President has warned that priority is functionality over reputation.

“We do not want to take someone who will cause problems within the dressing room,” Thohir has commented to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“What I do not need is to sign a star if he casts a shadow on a potential top player like Kovacic or Icardi. What could work better is a lesser name, but more experienced and functional to the project.

“Bearing in mind that, by navigating the Europa League Play-off round, we will be fighting on three fronts.”

Gary Medel remains the focus of talks between the club and Cardiff City.

“We are still discussing some details and I do not do announcements before everything is signed off. Then, it is clear that we need to keep in our control potential alternatives. I do not list names in general, but some players who have said no will be sorry in the future.

“Jovetic, Cerci and Lamela are impossible goals? I do not know, the market is open. The key thing is to respect the other clubs. It is why I do not want my directors to speak with the players before they have spoken with their clubs.

“It is obvious that we need a midfielder and striker, but names do not help our strategy.”

Thohir was talking on the same evening his side played against Manchester United, who they have been suggested as in talks with for Javier Hernandez.

“At United many changes are taking place. It will be useful to see the work of their players and to talk with management.

“Perhaps we will talk about Hernandez, then maybe at the end we will take from the Red Devils a midfielder…”

Inter, who draw that game to then lose on penalties, similarly drew with Real Madrid at the weekend.

“I liked the intensity, the desire to fight. Even after Bale’s goal I did not see panic in the eyes of the players, but a determination to put it right.

“Even if we had lost 4-0, it is important to always have the ability to be a team. To have a great season, each component must be used to their maximum.

“Fundamental will also be the work done at Pinetina. During the training sessions but also in the dressing room, where you do not want to create groups.”
