Mazzone, who led the Giallorossi between 1993 and 1996, cast his eye over the midweek 7-1 defeat suffered by the capital club.

“I was really shocked about the result because that’s the last thing I could expect,” Mazzone has told Gianluca Di Marzio’s website today.

“I don’t know why it happened, maybe Roma underestimated Bayern. But to be honest I didn’t expect Roma to play like that. Fans were shocked.

“This result might end up causing some damage to the team, so they need to play it down as much as possible and bounce back.

“They need to improve what went wrong and then try to draw some determination in order to face the next few games.

“I am sure Garcia will have admitted his mistakes. In cases like these, you really need to bounce back straight away.

“If you are not strong enough to forget, then you can struggle to go forward.”

Mazzone also shares a great friendship with Pep Guardiola who was one of his players when at Brescia.

“Pep is a fantastic guy, a great professional. He deserved to win. His tactics were spot on.”
