It’s rumoured Massimo Moratti resigned from Inter because he believes Walter Mazzarri should’ve been sacked.

The decision was announced this afternoon, as Honorary President Moratti and his remaining right hand men – including Angelomario Moratti, Rinaldo Ghelfi and Alberto Manzonetto – left the Board of Directors.

This means that for the first time in 20 years, Moratti has no say in how the club is run.

It is reported that Thohir was “shocked and stunned” by the sudden departure, while the reasons behind the mass resignation appear to be linked to Coach Mazzarri.

There are suggestions Moratti wanted Mazzarri to be sacked after scraping one point from three Serie A games, including Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Napoli.

Moratti hinted as much this week in a brief comment to reporters and Mazzarri said he did “not have time to respond.”

Thohir has publicly backed Mazzarri on numerous occasions and it’s reported this irritated Moratti, who felt his opinion was no longer being heeded.

The timing of the resignation was also unusual, as Inter host St-Etienne in the Europa League this evening and it’s likely Moratti will not attend at San Siro.

Moratti still owns 30 per cent of Internazionale, but seems now likely to hand over 15 per cent each to his sons Angelomario and Giovanni.
